Because There Is Controversy: The May Jailer Story

So apparently words that I said back in January are causing a big stir. For those that don’t know the website digital spy quoted my review of “Lana Del Rey EP”, referring to my reference of her album under the name May Jailer. First off, I would like to say that I am not responsible for this leak in any way. Secondly, I feel I should give a little bit of background on this album, how I came across it, and a little big of it’s history.

The above image was taken of my iTunes account, I’ve owned this album for about six or seven years and may, in fact, have been the first person to purchase it. When I bought it, it came to me as a burned CD, it has no flourish, in fact it had no track listing either. Thanks to the leakers, I have a track listing, despite that I’m disheartened by the fact that it was leaked to begin with.

The album itself consists of 15 acoustic tracks that have a compelling set of lyrics and tell a great story. If I had to compare it to anything, it sounds like Lizzy got a hold of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska album and put her own spin on it. It was recorded in Lake Placid, NY in 2005 or 2006. I can’t remember the exact year as it’s been so long ago. In truth, I have never met her, only her music, and it left me compelled. From Lake Placid she moved to NYC and got her start doing open mic nights and shows down there, including a few at the launching platform for Jeff Buckley, Sin-é. Truth be told, it wasn’t until late last year that I reconnected with her work, and I’m happy for it.

I don’t think there is much more I can say about the May Jailer album, but if you want to chat with me about it, I’m on Twitter @Kristoffrable.

  1. AWESOME! In my opinion, more better then her new songs, because this is her real voice, more classy, wonderful, and people adore it !

  2. What made you purchase it? Where did you purchase it from? Was that your first discovery of “Lizzy Grant?”

    • A friend of mine, who hung out with the guy who recorded it told me about it. Said that I needed to buy it. I sampled some of it, bought it from her website. As a musician, this was my first encounter with Lizzy, but I knew of her for a couple of years.

  3. Fascinating stuff, your very lucky to have not only heard of her back then, but to also purchase her music before she hit it big. Did you ever meet her?

    • Sadly no, but I always felt proud that someone who grew up in the area I did could write such great songs. I’m a big fan of hers, and I hope one day that I could meet her. She’s probably the most famous person from my area in music these days.

  4. What is the real evidence that May Jailer is Lana Del Rey? When I listen for example to Pretty Baby it does not sound like Lana at all. And she never confirmed that she was May Jailer.
