The Smarked for Death Wrestling Review for WWE Smackdown 4/10/12.

Its a very special live Smackdown, and its a blast from the past as well.  Mostly the usual ones that you would expect.  I was going to say there are some other older names I’d like to see but other than ones who have sadly passed I couldn’t come up with any names.

So… hey its time for the show!

They have definitely done a Piper’s Pit within the last six years.  Oh, they mean on Smackdown.  Yeah its usually a Raw exclusive thing.

Mean Gene is in the ring.  To find out which WWE Divas might be leaving the company soon call 1-900-909-9900 for the WCW Nitro hotline!

Looks like Facebook has given WWE some Twitter level money as they are now promoting that site as well.  Maybe there will be an exciting Instagram storyline soon!  Tepia Ladders and Chairs!

Anyways, Sheamus apologies for his behavior last week.  His face turn was done out of no where and he’s really just a more natural heel.  The Sheamus that came in to WWE wouldn’t have given a shit about hurting anyone.  That baby in the front row?  Boom!  Brogue kick.  Speaking of people who need a kick to the face, out comes Johnny Ace!  You know, Sheamus is coming across as a young punk and Johnny is the boss who just has to keep these kids in line.  I think I’d be a bit pissed off too.  I’m running a company and these kids start smacking people around.  Ace put Sheamus on probation, either fines him or threatens to (it didn’t quite go across that well) and then teams him up with Mean Gene.  Well that’s a hell of a start to the show.

HEYpetitis C its Cowboy Bob Orton!

Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry.

Really, Mark should win this match.  Randy is stuck in a feud with Kane.  Meanwhile, Henry has won two matches over CM Punk in the last two weeks and has a title match coming up this Monday.  That friends is what I call a push.  A win over Orton would guarantee a lot of momentum for Mark.  Not only that, but the fans would take him seriously again.  If Mark pins someone of the caliber of Orton then his chances against Punk get that much stronger.

Orton rams Mark into the ring post, not once but twice then rolls into the ring to… what?  Take the count out win?  Seems beneath him.    Or maybe the whole point was to give Kane time to appear on camera.  Kane has taken out Cowboy Bob Orton.  Now he’ll never get that cast off!  Hope you didn’t get any blood on your hands Kane.

So this match is what, a no contest?  Maybe a count out win for Henry but I never heard a count, the match just kinda stopped.  Randy runs to the back to help his dad and runs right into an ambush from Kane.  Wasn’t that difficult to set up either.  Cowboy’s arm is raised up even though he should be unconscious.  Must be a side effect from that arm that was broken for ten years.

“Benny Camer” vs. Ryback.

Some of the legends watch the match from the back.  Benny tries to cut a promo, just to get the crowd against him, so they can pop that much larger for Ryback.  Ryback runs through Benny with a clothesline and then deadlifts him up onto his back.  That was insane. Just straight up picked up a man who weighs 170-200 pounds.  Ryback gets the pin while screaming “feed me more”.  Somewhere Vince McMahon just got a huge reaction.  Get your Ryback “feed me more” t-shirts today!

Heath Slater tries to convince Tyson Kidd to team withhim now that Justin Gabriel is injured.  Heath says the Usos, but for a moment I thought he said the Russos.  Now there’s a tag team idea.  Heath brings in Jimmy Hart as their manager for the night.  That was actually a really cool tough and a nice nod to the Hart family (the Canadian one, not Jimmy).

Mick Foley comes down for commentary.

Heath Slater and Tyson Kidd vs. The Usos.

Heath and Tyson’s pairing could be very interesting.  Slater wants the spotlight all for himself.  He has lead singer syndrome.  Tyson just wants to wrestle and get some wins.  They don’t get along but they do have a bit of chemistry.  Jimmy Hart looks exactly like he looked 30 years ago when I first got into wrestling.  Has he been seen in sunlight in the last few decades?  There is a possibility of vamprirism here.  Mick Foley gets sick of hearing Hart’s megaphone.  Foley and Socko go after Jimmy, Jimmy runs away and Heath gets distracted so now the Usos get the win.  A silly finish to a match but not a bad one.  I do hope to see more from Heath and Tyson in the coming months.  There might be something there.

I think the older they get the more Rowdy Roddy Piper looks like Michael J Fox.

“The last time Piper’s Pit was on Smackdown a woman had a mole bitten off her face.”  Wow that was long ago.  That means Boogeyman and Jillian, in turn that could also mean Melina, Mercury, Nitro, and even Booker T.  That seems like a lifetime ago and not just six years.  Damn WWE moves fast when you look at it that way.

Roddy Piper comes out for a Piper’s Pit.  He addresses Daniel Bryan’s douchebag dressing down on AJ from last week’s show.

Piper calls out Daniel Bryan.  Hot damn I want that “Yes Yes Yes” shirt.  I love the fans chanting both yes yes yes and no no no.  And now an 18 seconds chant!  Fight it all you want WWE but Daniel Bryan is over.  DB announces not only a rematch, but a two out of three falls match.  Wouldn’t it be crazy if Sheamus beat Bryan twice in 18 seconds or less?  Two three counts still gives 12 more seconds for two Brogue kicks.  Piper brings out AJ and if you ever want to see a pro become a mark look at AJ’s face.  Which you probably are anyways.  AJ tries to defend Bryan and claims he’s still a good person.  Piper tries to help and bring out the angry emotions inside AJ.  I just realized that WWE is starting to build AJ up as America’s Sweetheart.  She will be the female face of WWE very soon.  Piper and Bryan play the dueling voices on AJ’s shoulders.  As heartbreaking as it is for her fans to see what Daniel says to her, Piper looks just as bad.  Its still a man telling her what to do and what to think.  Rowdy shows that while he might have two fake hips he still has what brought him to the dance.  Great promo against Daniel.  The word “coward” is used rarely and packs a punch that even the crowd felt.  Unfortunately then Piper feels a slap across the face from Bryan.  Real good segment for the overall Daniel and AJ story.  Nothing for the world title though.

Alicia Fox, Natalya and Great Khali vs. Drew McIntyre and the Bellas.

I don’t think I could put a worst match on paper.  The only possible good wrestling combination here is if Natalya could face off with Drew.  Drew walks out and a Bella gets pinned quickly because that’s what you do with people who are on their way out.  This is just an odd segment.  The answer comes when the faces celebrate at the top of the ramp… because Mae Young cant walk that far anymore.  Mae comes out, kicks Khali down to his knees, and slaps on a kiss.

I’m a bit torn on this segment.  On the one hand, its shitty for the Divas, and for Drew.  Khali cant wrestle and the less about him the better.  Mae is too old to be dragged out like this.  At least give the poor woman a wheelchair.   However, to be blunt, every time she is brought out could be the last time.  So why the hell not give her these segments?

Damien Sandow promo.  Same as last week.  He sounds good, but how much of this is off the top of his head.  How good a promo can he deliver live?  Also, can he wrestle?

Josh Matthews announces that both Orton’s were hit in the stomach by Kane and have possibly suffered abdominal injuries.  Well sure you have to hit the stomach.  Bruises wont show there.  Daniel Bryan could have told you that.

Mean Gene talks strategy with Sheamus about tonight’s match.  That sentence may have never been written before.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan – who you can see this Saturday in Rome NY for 2CW Wrestling!  takes on Hunico (with Camacho and his bike).

Hunico gets punched out of the ring.  He and Camacho are about to double team Duggan.  Hacksaw calls for backup… its Sgt Slaughter!  The Sarge can be seen this Friday in Watertown NY for 2CW Wrestling!  Hacksaw takes the 2×4 to both opponents.  Sarge locks on the Camel Clutch.  Nostalgia celebrates in the ring.

Cody Rhodes comes out and starts to say shit about Legends.  He should know better because Pops comes out.  Dusty Rhodes looks like he’s lost some weight.  I mean, still a big guy but no where near his biggest.  Damn.  Dusty calls his son the most naturally gifted athlete in WWE since Shawn Michaels.  I mean, I realize its his father saying it but that is some high praise.  Cody doesn’t want to talk about any of this in front of a crowd and asks his father to talk in the back.  If only more family matters were settled off camera!  I’m looking at you McMahon family.  Big Show comes out and flips Ric Flair’s script to cut a Dusty Rhodes-esque promo.  “Coupon clippin, Copenhagen dippin” coming to a t-shirt near you soon.  Big Show plays a beauty tip from Dashing Cody Rhodes as his embarrassing promo of the night.  Oh and Dusty thought he had problems with Goldust.

Daniel Bryan and Alberto Del Rio (with Ricardo Rodriguez) vs. Sheamus (World champion) and Mean Gene Okerlund (and their personal ring announcer Howard Finkel!)

Wow Bryan and Del Rio work shockingly well together.  They seem to be communicating telepathically.  One goes for a move, the other one is already there to assist it.  Quick tags, double teams, have they teamed before?  A feud between the two could lead to some of the best matches of both men’s careers.  Del Rio may have finally won me over.  Sheamus gets dumped to the outside and Mean Gene is surrounded.  Even Ricardo gets into the mix.  Music hits and Piper leads all the Legends out to save Gene-O!  Michael Cole calls them the Walking Dead and that’s the funniest thing he’s said in ten years.  With everyone distracted, Sheamus hits a Brogue Kick on Bryan for the pin.

That was actually really fun, and none of the current WWE stars looked bad.  All the Legends take turns hitting Rodriguez.  Tony Atlas with a press slam and Michael Cole quotes Team Hellions at 2CW with a “he’s still got it”.  Michael Cole even gets punched out!  Thus making this the greatest Smackdown ever!
