WooHoo! New comic book day is once again here. And what a big day it is. Many comic book stores had midnight release parties for Avengers vs. X-Men #1. I am shocked. I’ve seen it for CDs, and video games, and Harry Potter, and Twilight, and especially movies. But never for a comic. The stores nearest to me are unfortunately not doing such a thing. But if you live next to a cool store I hope you went and enjoyed yourself!
Be sure to check out the bar that says “Circle of Hellions” which will soon include our links of approved comic book stores. Cool comic stores are helpful, knowledgeable, cool, and most of all – welcoming to everyone. Us old geeks should love it, but these stores are also havens for women and kids. The two customer bases that need to be brought into comics so that this medium we all love so much can continue.
Lets get this comic party started!
Only four comic books made the cut this week. Why is that? Maybe some publishers wanted to stay away from the juggernaut (pun intended) that is Avengers vs. X-Men. Or it could just be an off week. Now, don’t misunderstand me. There are no bad covers this week. My criteria for this column is that the covers have to be so good I will want to buy a comic I have never heard or seen before solely because of the cover. Even if it is 100s or 1000s of issues in and the story is no where near a jumping on point, the cover is too damn pretty.
Daredevil #10.1
Never before the Mark Waid run have Daredevil’s powers been so thoroughly explored. Not just the benefits of these powers, but the limitations as well. Even the covers convey how DD perceives the world. Even a point one, which could be a turn off, or a day off, brings an incredible image.
Supurbia #2
Housewives with Guns sounds like the title of a VHS your parents would never let you rent. Then when you’re older you discover it at a con or some wonderful geeky garage sale. Or you pick up Supurbia and enjoy the hell out of this alternate take on super heroes. We love Grace Randolph here! Oh, but the cover. This isn’t what super hero comics are supposed to be. Its not about the common man, nor is it about the Tights being common. Everything going on with this cover throws preconceptions out the bay windows.
Whispers #2
Speaking of not knowing anything about a comic. I missed issue one. In fact I somehow never heard of Whispers before seeing this cover. And I want to know more. Its a dream image, but with bits of familiar making up this frightening image. If I can find a copy of #1 today I’ll damn sure buy this one as well.
Wolverine and the X-men #8
Even if you knew nothing of the X-Men or current goings-on everyone is familiar with Wolverine at this point. And Wolverine can walk. Professor X cannot. To see Logan leading the school is one thing. To see him in the same position as the founder is shocking. Will a bald Wolverine be showing his shiny dome soon? One can only hope.
