If you haven’t heard of Big K.R.I.T. by now I can infer one of two things. One, that you haven’t heard any of his mix tapes (K.R.I.T. Was Here, Return of 4Eva); two, that you didn’t listen to the Roots’ new album Undun, and shame on you for that! The Roots’ track, “Make My” shows us that K.R.I.T. is a pretty versatile guy, and rightly so. One will notice that he may not flow as well as other rappers, but that’s not what his appeal really is. On K.R.I.T.’s third mixtape he stays pretty consistent, but that’s far from a bad thing.

The cover to this mixtape almost looks like it could be a prequel to The Roots’ latest album, serving almost a day in the life of that character. But this compilation is far from that; K.R.I.T. samples a lot of old school soul and R&B tracks, and the production and flow of this album is so smooth and really brings southern Hip-Hop back into better standing. His appeal isn’t in your face raps that will melt your skin to particulate mass, but in thoroughly evoking songs that are accessible, tell great stories and are easy to relate to.

The albums first, well not single, but the first song from the album to be released, “Boobie Miles,” is not what it’s title implies. In fact, remove an “o” in the first word, add a “b” and you know the inspiration; the song is a story, using a series of sports metaphors, about an athlete that loses out on a football career due to a knee injury. More deeply, the song is a piece of advice, for those striving for greater things.

This entire album feels inspiring, almost serving as a positive message to how success is and how much of a humbling experience it can really be. I encourage you, get a hold of this mixtape however you can, because this is some of the best rap/hip-hop out there today!
