New DVD Day! 12/13/11.

Its getting close to Christmas which means… actually it means less releases than usual.  Most of the big ones are already out.  Today is the last week you’ll see anything big for awhile.  Next week is too close to Christmas.  After that is the annual celebration of the holiday slump.  Yay!  I ordered my post holiday slump cards today.  Oh, right, DVDs!  Lets look at what’s coming out today.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

A rare movie in a series of films that doesn’t require knowledge of the other movies.  My lady has yet to see any of the Apes movies but from the first trailer she knew she wanted to see this one.  Its an easy premise.  Man makes primates super intelligent and then pays the price.  Easy and simple enough for anyone to follow.  However, its the rare summer movie that is also well written and engaging.  Well worth buying today and there’s a good chance people have already done their Christmas shopping so you don’t have to worry about seeing two of these under the tree.

Family Guy Volume 9

If you’re still collecting these on their own.  I’m waiting for a massive and awesome set whenever the show concludes.  In the meantime its easy to enjoy the show on Netflix or Hulu.  But, you know, if you want to still buy it go right ahead.

The Rocketeer!  20th Anniversary edition!  On Blu Ray!

This movie is carving an honored place as the grandfather of all current super hero films.  Not big in its theatrical release, its nice to see this awesome movie become an all time classic.

Fright Night

A pretty good re-make of the original 80s horror movie.  Plus, David Tennent. So you know, the ladies got some love for this flick.

WWE Best of King of the Ring

A shockingly good collection.  There’s a lot of really great matches on here.  A lot featuring stars of TNA or ones that aren’t always on the best of terms with WWE.  A very mature and intelligent fan collection.  I’ll wait in case I get it for Christmas but if not this must be added to the collection.

Sledge Hammer the Complete Series

I thought this was already released on DVD years ago. Must have gone out of print.  Anyways this is a strange show.  Kind of like Police Squad but less cartoonish.  However its still a bigger cartoon than any other sitcom.  You know what, imagine an Adult Swim creative team went back in time to the mid 80s and got a sitcom on network TV.  That’s what this show is!

Death Valley Season One

From what I understand this is a dark comedy about cops hunting the supernatural monsters that have invaded their juristiction.  Its on MTV, a channel I try to avoid at all costs and so I’ve never seen an episode.  However, something this full of monsters is worth a try.

The Guild Season Five

This DVD might be my weekend.  I’m really hoping with this release the videos are no longer X-Box exclusive.  Every season the Guild has more money to play with and we worry they will sell out.  But every season it gets geekier and you love the characters more.  Really hoping to get my hands on this soon.  I’m already setting aside at least two hours this weekend for it.
