4. Murder by Death – Red of Tooth & Claw (2008)
Adam Turla has described this album as “Homer’s Odyssey of revenge, only without the honorable character at the center.” You always get this Old West feel to Murder by Death, but they make it work and throw a cello in there for good measure. This is Murder by Death at their best, fully realized. I’ve listened to this album more times than any album in the last ten years. There is always this sense of foreboding on these songs, like there is a serial killer behind a door or in the shadowed corner and he’s going to come out to kill you. More people need to know this band and I hope this gets them even more exposure.
