Triple H is now in charge of your favorite wrestling shows. (Well, until Ring of Honor starts up in September.) On the first Raw under his reign he immediately started shaking things up. Jim Ross is back at the announce table, where he belongs to be for as long as he desires. We can be led to believe that Hunter had some role in CM Punk being brought back. But the changes don’t have to stop there! Part reality, part story line, Hunter will be the creative king of WWE for the next generation. While he is Vince McMahon’s protege that doesn’t mean he shares all of Vince’s opinions. Here is the first of five ideas for things that Triple H can and should change within WWE.
Part 1. Bring back the Cruiserweight division.
One of the few things that WCW and TNA have ever had over WWE is a focus on cruiserweights. Call it light heavyweight, X division, or anything else you like. WWE tried half assed to have this group, but never truly put focus behind it. Guys like Christian and Jerry Lynn won the title with little build up or TV matches. The title died a slow death until Hornswoggle retired the belt under the ring in his little portal to some fantasy land.
With guys already on the roster, plus the wealth of talent all over the world, WWE could give exposure to some of the greatest wrestlers in the world. No, TNA does not give exposure. Find a Twitter history from the 2011 Royal Rumble. Thousands of people asking where Booker T and Kevin Nash have been for the last few years. They were on TNA every week, and no one noticed. If people aren’t noticing the main event guys then they damn sure aren’t noticing the X Divsion guys. Samoa Joe needs to leave TNA the first opportunity he gets. With CM Punk building up some pull in WWE, his boy Joe has a better chance than ever to join.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Look at the current WWE roster. Full of guys who aren’t doing anything, but given this title to battle over, these men could have balls out exciting matches every week. Feature one bout on each show – Raw, Smackdown, Superstars and of course the PPVs. Take the following men, who aren’t doing much else right now: DH Smith, Curt Hawkins, Evan Bourne, JTG, Primo, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Sin Cara (well…), Trent Barretta, Tyson Kidd, Yoshi Tatsu, half of NXT, half of Florida. And then there are guys like Tyler Reks who is still growing as a wrestler and might find his niche in such a division.
Then look at guys who aren’t in WWE or TNA that could blow the roof off of larger arenas. The Kings of Wrestling, Colt Cabana, Low Ki, Jay Lethal, Petey Williams, American Wolves and on and on. Best of all, I haven’t even begun to list the names that could put on crazy matches, nor have I gone outside of the US.
Make it a title than can appear on any show, like the tag team titles are supposed to be (and I’ll get to the tag division later in the week). But the most important thing it to place no limits on these matches. I can understand the desire to not have the main event matches overshadowed by these matches. Well, if you don’t know how to have a good match maybe you shouldn’t be in the main event. An amazing cruiserweight match could open the card and your world champions CM Punk or Christian could still put on a 5 star match that is the better of the two.
The younger fans love Rey Mysterio, Jeff Hardy, and guys that do crazy moves. Younger fans that would want the t-shirts and action figures and best of cruiserweights DVDs. It makes sense financially too Hunter! Come up with some cool name (WWE Unlimited?) give them the opening match of the show, and watch people tune in.

I think there’s a certain time and place when promotions should focus on cruiserweight divisions. TNA should drop their high money guys and rekindle the X-Division and they have enough guys. Daniels, Shelley, KAZ, Kendrick, Aries, Sauronson, Kash, Zima (and technically Angle is a cruiserweight).
The WWE uh boy has too many titles. If it were to do away with its mid tier titles or divas, I’d say bring back the cruiserweights… but to the WWE the cruiswerweights are just guys to do jobs and they kind of should be. Anyone that isn’t 6’4″ is just seen as less than. So less than that they don’t even want them to have their division.
WWE could have Gabriel, Tyson, Rhodes, Heath, Sin Cara,, Evan and Kofi in the cruiserweight division… but instead realistically I say make the tag titles or the mid tier titles as the cruiserweight division.
