Those that know me know that I am a supporter of the arts. I am mainly a music man, but I also dabble in books, movies, etc. Recently I downloaded Jay-Z & Kanye West’s new album Watch the Throne. I am optimistic when it comes to music, except for bands that I’ve given up on, such as Linkin Park, Hoobastank, and AC/DC.
So needless to say I was optimistic about the Throne, I mean who wouldn’t lately with things like Game of Thrones becoming an outstanding TV series and fantasy novels galore, thrones are IN folks, I mean you want one, I want one…we all want thrones! But I digress, and I began with a track called “Otis.” Now my first objection to the track is the fact that it said it featured Otis Redding. Are you serious bro? Features OTIS MOTHER FUCKING REDDING.
Alright, I am an Otis Redding fan, a huge one. I firmly believe that Otis Blues is one of the greatest albums of all time! Period! It should be Otis Redding featuring Jay-Z & Kanye West, don’t kid yourselves boys. Now I will say I am a fan of both Jay-Z & Kanye West. Hell I wore out The Blueprint and The Black Album, loved them both, the same goes for Kanye who wrote some tracks for those albums and is arguably the best rapper to come out of the 2000’s. Every album of Kanye’s is genius (except 808 and Heartbreak, don’t get me started on that steaming pile.).
The song samples Otis’ “Try A Little Tenderness,” a seminal classic from the late Redding. The song starts with Redding and the original song, for a minute there I thought they were just playing the song from a CD or something. Then the beat hits and Jay-Z comes in with the words “sound so soulful don’t you think?” I agree, yes it does, and then the song turns into the ordinary rap song about what rappers “do,” meaning popping bottles and putting models into limos. Seriously? You’re going to take a classic and turn it into shit, but wait it gets better.
When rappers use other songs as hooks in their songs, many of them do it well. Hell Kanye did it extremely well with “Gold Digger” via Jamie Foxx, but what results here has got to be the most annoying hook for a rap song ever! I can’t describe it, but you just, you…I don’t know how to fucking say it, but it sure as shit is not good. And then there is literal screaming towards the end of the song. Screaming. One of the most annoying sounds next to the sound of the alarm going off in the morning. I have since removed this album from my iTunes and have talked shit about it ever since.
Do not buy this album! This is as bad as what James Frey does to young aspiring writers. It’s ear rape, save yourself! Judging by the picture below, Otis agrees with me. Listen to Otis Redding, do not listen to this pile of shit you call a rap album. I’m sorry Kanye, I’m sorry Jay-Z, but its the truth.

[…] And the Winnter Is: Jay-Z & Kanye West for “Otis.” If you haven’t heard why I think this song, and the album it comes from is an abomination, read it HERE. […]
