At Odds with Wrestling Homework – Wrestlicious episodes 9 and 10

Hey. How’s it going? It’s been awhile here. My life and writing focuses have changed over the last year, but there is still some unfinished business. One of those involves seeing through the brief run of Wrestlicious to its completion. My friends over at the At Odds with Wrestling podcast assign each other wrestling related homework assignments and that lesson plan has led us all once again to this short lived female centric wrestling promotion. Just three more episodes left and I’ll see it through to the end. This week we watched episodes 9 and 10.

Episode 9 starts off with a reminder from the last episode that Glory and Felony were the last two women standing and thus they will compete tonight to crown the first Wrestlicious champion.

Jimmy Hart welcomes us to the show with his new co-host Savannah. Savannah means to imply she’s easy going, but Hart thinks she’s easy. And the bar has been set for the evening.

I think Hart’s previous co-host, Brooke Lynn, is at the doctor’s office. She’s not introduced though and I don’t care enough to go through my roster trading cards to confirm the identity. Oh, and a bad joke is had.

Felony is in green screen jail for another bad joke.

The set up for tonight’s main event is showcased in this week’s Wrestlicious Heroines comic book. Not since the glory days of the Femforce comic has their been such over enhanced female anatomy.

Felony (escorted by Officer Bubba) vs Glory to be the first Wrestlicious champion.

Glory runs right into the ring and charges at Felony. This match starts off hot. Glory hits a succession of arm drags. Where the hell did that come from? “Felony is mad her parole board hearing is scheduled for February 31st.” Ok, that was funny.

This match is actually very competitive. There’s some good moves. Some logical progression to the match. Moves that matter. Is this the best match in Wrestlicious history? There’s honestly only one previous match that was any good, so it’s not a stiff competition.

I ended up liking this match far more than expected. I dismiss pretty much every segment on every episode from the start because, honestly, it’s not very good. But this match exceeded all expectations and then some to become really enjoyable.

“Consecutive sentences are not a paragraph.” Ok, I liked that one too.

Glory with a big leg drop and a split pin and she becomes the first champion.

JV Rich, hey remember him, comes out with Cousin Cathy and Lil Slam on his arms, and he presents the championship crown to Glory. Glory is very thankful and vows to defend the title against anyone. Toni the Top comes out to challenge. The title will be defended… later in the show? It’s barely a half hour show. How are they going to pull this off?

Bandita’s Cantina with a dumb joke.

There’s a hot nurse with a patient. I have no idea who this girl is but she’s hot and that’s what the jokes are about.

This show needs to do a better job of showing or telling the names of the wrestlers. Remember, any episode of Wrestlicious could be someone’s first.

Malibu McKenzie is in a bikini shoot in this week’s Takedown Spotlight.

On the latest episode of the Young and the Wrestlers we check in on Boot Camp Bailey’s recruits. Felony drags a young lady into the ring and beats her up while the guard watches. I’ve definitely watched that video in an incognito tab before. Later that day, the recruits have to sleep in the ring. Then, a random update is thrown in to tell us that trainee #2 is the sole survivor and she will be debuting soon as Emo Leigh. Definitely getting rid of some stock footage there and burning through what they have.

Toni the Top vs. Glory.

Toni hits a suicide dive onto Glory and the two have a huge fight outside of the ring. Glory’s top is working overtime tonight. Referees and staff come out to separate the women. The editor has chosen very specific camera shots and hard edits to keep this show safe for syndicated television.

Savannah says she’ll see us again next week.

Episode 10.

Johnny C is going to retire from ring announcing so he can spend more time with his new lady, who we are assuming to be Cousin Cassie. Johnny C Jr is going to take over. Oh no, the new lady is not Cassie, it’s White Magic!

Jimmy Hart gives Savannah a mixed drink recipe.

Cousin Cassie and Tyler Texas have a dumb joke in their Country Quickie segment.

What in the hell is this? The show is on location at a nightclub in Minneapolis. There are three more episodes after this one and it’s time to go on location? I’m sure the fans in attendance were nothing if not inoffensive throughout the taping.

Juvi Hall vs. Cousin Cassie.

Juvi’s music sounds like a rights free version of Pantera’s “Walk”. Juvi has a different body proportion than we’re used to. Rather long in the torso. Gear is slung dangerously low. Fitting for a nightclub but not for in ring activities. Naughty Girl Faith is ringside for no reason.

The flying head scissors is a risky move here. Cassie hits a sunset flip for the pin. Again, I’m sure there are very carefully chosen camera angles for this finish.

Faith attacks Cassie after the match and Texas comes out to make the save.

“Takedown on Tour”. Sure. That’s one way to describe it.

Wrewind of last week’s title match.

Shana Na and the Be- Bops at the malt shop for jokes.

Kickstart Katie is the focus of this episode’s bikini shoot. Big time girl next door energy from Katie that we have not seen before.

Paige Webb looking stunning in a new You’ve Got Male segment. “How do you like my cookies?” I’m not sure if this joke is meant to go down the same dark paths I’m leading it towards.

Hope and Faith vs Marley and “the latest newcomer” Coco Montego.

Johnny C Jr.’s ring announcing is drowned out by the bargain bin music selections. Faith comes out by herself. What is faith without hope? Faith has a new partner, the aforementioned White Magic.

Miss Coco with a 1-900 gimmick as the greatest psychic on the island.

Coco is hurt by White Magic’s voodoo doll. GLOW did it better.

Marley can fight off the voodoo attempts because her yoga is stronger than voodoo. What in the hell am I watching?

Holy crap, “special referee Austin Aries”. I’m losing it. This is the funniest thing in the show’s history.

This match is really the Marley and Faith show, which makes a lot of sense. Numerous pin reversals. A real test of Faith.

Coco comes in the ring and again, there is a lot of editing to be done here. The back of her gear would fit in, or ride up, perfectly during the 2025 golden age of ass, but may have been a bit too much in 2010.

White Magic hits the referee with some sort of voodoo weapon thing and that results in a DQ.

In a Picture in Picture moment, Cassie and Texas invite us back for next week.

It’s been a long time since we watched episode 8. Wrestlicious is terrible but eight episodes in and it felt like rules were in place. Then episode 10 is on the road and contestants aren’t wearing PG level clothing and it’s like a brand new show. Episode 10 feels more like a season two opener. Familiar faces, but some things have changed. Or, and I wonder, if the on the road gimmick was either born out of a lack of footage to pad out more episodes, or an attempt at course correction in the hopes of renewal.

It takes a lot to make pretty girls tough to watch, but Wrestlicious finds a way to make it happen.
