At Odds with Wrestling Homework – Wrestlicious Episodes 7 and 8

Welcome back as we proceed to watch the entire oddity that is Wrestlicious. I’m joining the At Odds with Wrestling podcast as we all watch this series for the first time and share our opinions on this shiny example of a fool and his money.

Episode 7 opens with Jimmy Hart and Brooke Lyn telling bad jokes as they welcome us to tonight’s show. Hope you all like Brooke, because she’s going to be seen a lot over the next two episodes.

Johnny C is in the locker room with a cameo appearance by Kandy Kisses and Sierra Sheraton. Maui – I think – tells Johnny that the Hula dance tells a story and Johnny asks her to turn around so he can see how the story ends. I’m not sure if that’s a joke about leaving or about checking out her butt.

Glory’s Wrestlicious rap is shown. We haven’t seen one of those in awhile.

Tonight’s TakeDown Spotlight features Glory in the tiniest bathing suit we’ve seen so far in the Spotlights. This feels real close to too much for TV and is as close as we get to porn in this episode. I’m starting to think every episode of Wrestlicious has such a moment.

Brooke is caught paying off Kickstart Katie and the two of them are shocked to see the camera. More on this later.

Brooke Lynn vs Alexandra the Great.

Alexandra skins the cat over the top rope for her entrance. Her entire offense is just that she’s very strong. There are a lot of holds in this match. Brooke comes across as more experienced and calling the match. That said, is Alexandra that limited? Alexandra has some good acting and expressions but little skill. Why is this match going so long, and why is it so competitive? I end up being wrong but at this point I predict this is the only match of the episode. Alexandra locks on a Sharp Shooter. Kickstart Katie runs out and attacks her, leading to a DQ. Is this the first DQ in Wrestlicious so far?

Glory and Felony will soon face off to be crowned the first champion but who will be the first #1 contender? Vote now.

Maria Toro, Bandida, and Tyler Texas star in this week’s Wrestlicious Heroines comic. This is so offensive I had to take pictures to share it with those who didn’t watch. Enjoy.

I wonder if this seems more offensive in comic form and would have, well, not come across as a good thing, but been a little easier to swallow in live action.

Maria Toro (with Bandita) vs. Tyler Texas.

I guess we are getting a second match. These two brawled during the Hoedown Throwdown thus setting up this match. Tyler brings out Cousin Cassie for backup. Tyler charges at Maria’s red cape and spears Maria.

WTF is this?! Wrestling?! The match is long enough to get a commercial break. Bandita interferes from the outside in a way that makes sense. A hurracanrana on the outside?! Maria still kicks out of this. Toro with a submission but Tyler makes it to the ropes. This is actually a good competitive match. Tyler with a spinning DDT for the pin. Cassie and Bandita get in the ring and all four women fight. The referees and security come out to separate all of them.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is the best match so far in the show.

Jimmy Hart and Brooke Lyn say goodbye.

Episode 8.

We get a “Previously on” recap.

Jimmy Hart and Brooke welcome us back. JV Rick has made a submission match for tonight. Your opponent’s corner must throw in the towel. I’m sure this will all make sense.

Sha Na Na is telling the BeBops she’s waiting for her date, who has kids at McDonald’s or something because he’s a Mack daddy.

This week’s Wrestlicious Heroines sets up our next match continuing the new feud between Kickstart Katie and Brooke Lyn vs Alexandra the Great and I guess her best friend is Lacey Von Erich. The comic tells us that Kickstart Katie, “likes it when things get rough.” From Pro Wrestling Illustrated to Easyriders.

Kickstart Katie (with Brooke Lyn) vs. Alexandra the Great (with Lacey Von Erich) in a Submission match.

The match starts during a commercial break. The camera zooms in a bit too close to Alexandra. Much like her namesake, she’s spreading the Greek influence far and wide.

ShaNaNa and the BeBops are enjoying seeing wrestling live and in living color. Katie forgets that pins don’t count. When did Brooke become the Poochie of Wrestlicious? She is all over both of these episodes for no good reason. There are many submission attempts and grappling. I start chanting Bloodsport (clap clap). We get more close ups of Alexandra and the camel clutch almost has to be renamed. She is called a female Ivan Putski. I don’t think she could be called a female Scott Putski.

Alexandra locks on her version of a Sharp Shooter called the Krakow Krippler. Brooke jumps in and tries to choke Alexandra with the towel. Lacey comes in and locks the Claw on Brooke. Brooke flails and drops the towel, which the referee takes as her throwing in the towel and thus the match ends and Alexandra is the winner. What kind of Russo booking is this? Katie is mad at Brooke because of this loss and I guess that gives an excuse to feature Brooke again on the next episode.

In the Savannah School Belle segment the word of the day is “ranch” which sounds like “wrench” in the joke.

Once again, fans can vote for the next #1 contender.

Tonight’s Takedown Spotlight features Felony. Not as gratuitous as Glory’s was, but also Alexandra had the closeup of the night and I guess there’s only one per show.

Are You Smarter than a Male Wrestler features Marley and the Cuban Assassin doing math. A thing I’m noticing the more I watch this show, and thankfully there’s only 13 episodes, some things I found funny the first time that get no reaction from me now. Like this segment.

Amber Lively and Marley vs. Azizza and Brooke Lyn.

Azizza is an Egyptian belly dancer, and that’s something new. But it doesn’t matter. Brooke can’t wrestle because she’s still hurting from Lacey Von Erich’s attack. Instead of replacing Brooke so we can see what Azizza is all about, both women are replaced in this match. Introducing Fran and Gert – the Lunch Ladies.

I write WTF in my notes. I wonder with what small GLOW connections there are if this might be Sara and Mabel from GLOW. I also paused and thought thank God there’s only 3 minutes left of the show.

Alright, the Lunch Ladies struggling to enter the ring is pretty damn funny. They jump the face team. The Lunch Ladies have a brief advantage before they collide with each other. Tongs are used as weapons and the referee has seen too much then calls for the DQ. Our second one in as many episodes.

OMG there’s a cart full of pies. Pies in faces! The referee gets a pie. ShaNaNa and the BeBops get pied. I bet in all of her black and white innocence, ShaNaNa never experienced a cream pie before (that joke’s just for you, Adam).

These two episodes show the best and worst of Wrestlicious. There was one actually good match. I think that match could be on TV today, and the only thing I would change is toning down the cartoon gimmicks. But then there’s so many odd segments. Brooke is all over the show. The show still feels like a half hour showcase of one person’s fetishes that occasionally does something good and interesting. Broken clock logic. I find myself wondering how much better the concept could be if any of these women had won that lottery.
