Here we go again. For those of you just joining us, here’s the background: the hosts of the At Odds with Wrestling podcast will assign each other something wrestling related to watch during the weeks without a major pay per view. I join in on the fun and give my own thoughts as a writing exercise and sometimes punishment. This week we continue to watch the short lived women’s wrestling show, Wrestlicious.
We begin episode 3 with Leyla Milani and Jimmy Hart as our hosts, I guess. There’s a dumb joke about Hart getting her bags.
Later tonight we will see the Beauties versus the Beasts.
In the Wrestlicious Wrewind, we rewatch some of the Autumn Frost vs Paige Webb match from the last episode.
The next three women have been announced for the upcoming and unnamed Battle Royal, Glory, Autumn Frost, and Tyler Texas.
Leyla now has her own recurring segment in which she is lounging in a bikini and reading a romance novel in front of a blue screen beach. She tells us that love is like a body slam and there’s more to that but honestly I didn’t care enough to write it all down.
Cousin Cassie is the subject of this week’s TakeDown Spotlight and it’s a bikini shoot on the beach and one of the longer segments on the show, which is not a bad thing.
Once again, remember to vote for the name of the upcoming Battle Royal.
Now for a Dr. Gross segment and he is with Amber Lively. Dr. Gross tells Amber that the regular doctor, Dr. Flood is in bed with Flo, “you mean the flu, you don’t know (medical terminology, she said something I didn’t write down)” and Gross responds, no I mean Flo, you don’t know Dr. Flood. Is this an affair joke? A period joke? With so many attractive women on this show, the joke falls flat.
It’s now time for the main event. Which is also the only match on this episode.
White Magic and Draculetta vs. Amber Lively and Lacey Von Erich.
Draculetta is the late Daffney and she gives her all here. I’ve always been a big Daffney fan and I think her beauty shines in lesser material such as Wrestlicious. Once Draculetta emerges from the coffin, there is an attempt at a black and white and red filter for the show which almost works. Draculetta hangs upside down from the ropes, akin to what Ariel/Shelly Martinez did in WWE-ECW. I would gladly keep them both, and I think there’s plenty of room for both to hang.
Amber Lively is a cheerleader, but her opponent is a “Fear Leader”, and I think I want to steal that for a future character.
Amber is now and better known as Madison Rayne. This costume is so flattering it crosses over into anime fan service. Many of the outfits for the girls of Wrestlicious look like they came from Spirit Halloween, and despite Amber being small, this outfit looks like she bought a size down. Not that that’s a bad thing.
White Magic has two tiny voodoo dolls of her opponents and randomly jabs at them to get out of holds or gain an advantage. We, the audience at home, knows this because of camera close ups and the announcer’s exposition but I can’t imagine the live audience had any idea what was going on.
Lacey wrestles barefoot in tribute to Kevin Von Erich. I’m sure there are subsections of fetish websites devoted to her. She also missed making a fortune on OnlyFans by a few years.
Wrestlicious debuts a “Double Take” feature in which two cameras follow all of the tag team action taking place.
Back to one camera, and this footage goes blurry at the worst times. We need an HD clean up for some of these matches. Draculetta walks away so the faces can make a tag. The “inverted tower of London” feels like an innuendo call. The voodoo doll is brought into play again. Amber kicks out of multiple big moves and pin attempts. She might be the best talent we’ve seen so far. Lacey bravely comes in to break up a chin lock. Draculetta has Amber in a “human pretzel spot” and this show comes very close to getting a R rating with that camera angle. Amber starts fighting back and gets a two count. Lacey makes a tag with Amber’s foot. Again, content for certain sites. Lacey locks a Claw hold on Draculetta, meanwhile Magic takes out Amber. Magic hits Lacey with the voodoo stick and that finally causes a disqualification. Draculetta and White Magic celebrate like they won.
JV raps and then we get a JV’s Crib segment with boobs reading a book on the bed. No names are given and the ladies aren’t established enough to know who is who without some help. Hart kicks everyone out so he can make the beds. Jimmy Hart makes beds like someone who has never touched any bit of bedding before in his life.
To be horrible and pervy for a moment. Have you ever seen someone pretend to do something and it’s so bad that it takes you out of anything else? There’s an adult film where the POV guy is cooking eggs before the action happens and it’s the worst egg cooking experience in all of human history. It will take you out of everything else happening in the scene and drive a viewer mad. And Jimmy Hart in this segment is equivalent to that.
On to episode four.
Leyla and Jimmy Hart are back to open the show.
We meet Sha Na Na and the Be-Bops.
The girls come out for an in ring promo and they were all raised by parents who sheltered them and they’ve only been exposed to the pop culture of the 1950s. Real Blast from the Past situation. They list their favorite wrestlers, all from a black and white era. I’m guessing Jim Cornette wrote this segment.
Back to JV’s Crib and Toni the Top brings another woman for JV to insult. This ends up becoming more and more revealing. I think JV has a love, a lust, for women but I don’t know that he respects them.
This week’s Wrestlicious Wrewind is last week’s tag team match.
The next three girls – Kickstart Katie, Maui, and Toni the Top – are announced for the battle royal.
Leyla reads a book while in a bikini once more and this week lets us know that “love is like a clothesline”. I can’t imagine she’ll be able to compare love to a piledriver.
On a new edition of the Young and the Wrestless, we are back to Boot Camp Bailey and her new recruits. Bailey pairs them with trainers. One of the trainees and her new coach have the most aggressive match we’ve seen on the show thus far. The recruits need to clean up the hot tub with toothbrushes.
This week’s TakeDown Spotlight features Tyler Texas in a bikini.
Sha Na Na and the Be Bops say hello again.
Sierra Sheraton talks to Johnny C in the locker room, much like a classic GLOW segment. Johnny calls her spoiled and says she’s not that little. These aren’t even good digs.
On a new edition of Are you smarter than a male wrestler, this week’s contestants are Marley and of all people, the Cuban Assassin. Never in a hundred years would I have predicted this crossover. A squared plus B squared equals what? The Assassin says he doesn’t hang out with squares. Must have got that slang language from Sha Na Na.
Sierra Sheraton vs Marley.
Marley is Daizee Haze. She is fantastic in this match. This is my new top match for the show. Sierra does some fun character work and really plays up the bored rich snob. Sierra is so much bigger than Marley. It’s like watching Maitland Ward throw around Topanga. There’s a good Victory Roll in the match. Marley with a crucifix attempt but Sierra powers up and hits a Samoan Drop. Sierra hits a big boot that looked great and devastating. Sierra gets the win.
Leyla tells us one more joke to end the show.
To the shock of all we actually got some fun wrestling on this show that barely has any wrestling. However, the camera work, the editing, and the great range of ability levels make it a tough watch as a wrestling fan. It reminds me of when wrestling is worked into a sitcom. The ring never looks right, the ropes are terrible, and it’s just quick hits or holds so the regular cast members can run up to ringside to have conversations. JV Rich seems exploitive and the longer the show goes on his character’s priorities appear to be money, girls, then finally and a distant last place – put on a wrestling show.
There are still many women we have yet to meet and a ton of filler on what is only a half hour show. It will be interesting to see if anything improves in future episodes or if they were all filmed and edited so close together there’s no opportunity for growth.
