I was at work the other day looking at all of the law and history books and out of no where I wondered what a similar library would look like in the Marvel Universe (or the DC, or any shared universe). What started out as a simple thought has escalated over days. Every bit of law and order, rules and regulations, would have to be different in such a universe.
Religion changes immediately. When literal gods are part of the world’s most well known super hero team, it becomes tough to be an atheist. Also does the proven existence of aliens change religion as well? If we are made in God’s image, how do we make sense of other images?
Also, would death still be a legal end for a contract? Wills and marriages would need some sort of caveat clarifying if they are still valid should a person come back from the dead. Are you still married? Do any beneficiaries have to return anything bequeathed to them? If someone dies in one state but is resurrected in another, is this now a federal matter? What about another planet? Maybe some offshoot of maritime law would apply.
I’m putting this out there as tonight’s thought because I would like some feedback to this. What other parts of society would change in such a world? Or maybe you have theorized some solutions.
Also, I have my kid tonight and he gets my attention. If you’re part of my blog post a day, remember that the days I have my son will feature shorter posts.
Give me your own ideas and we’ll come back to this as these posts evolve.

Very interesting topic, and it’s never really crossed my mind before. For me, the most interesting thing you brought up is the will. With so many people in those worlds constantly coming back to life, there would certainly have to be some kind of clause. Maybe it gets written with time in mind. Like, “If you return from the dead within 1 year, this happens…”, and maybe things are prorated based on how many years you are dead before returning.
And then there’s the part where you pretend to be dead but go around in a different costume with a different name. What kind of law penalties should there be for that?
And when the bad guys turn babyface, why do we rarely see the legal reprecussions from that? “I mean, it’s great you turned good and helped us defeat Dr. Doom, but you still intentionally destroyed the Hoover Dam and and committed attempted murder of thousands of people down stream.”
This is a fascinating topic you have presented.
