“Tall Slut No Panties” and Big Bang.

How’s that for a title?!

Recently we discovered the show “Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23”.  Two seasons of a cancelled show on Netflix.  What on Earth could be the reason for writing about a cancelled show years after cancellation?  A show not called Firefly that is.  Turns out its an absolutely brilliant show with some of the whip smartest writing I’ve heard in awhile.

Then there was a comic book episode.

The Bitch, Chloe, has a graphic novel/comic book based on her called, Tall Slut, No Panties.  Throughout the episode we see that Chloe, who usually cares about nothing, has a pristine collection of the comic with every issue sealed in bags and boards.  We meet the artist, see his other works, and see how much other people love the comic.  The Bitch’s roommate, June, has her own self drawn on loose leaf paper comic book.  There are some very well done motion comics mixed into the episode that greatly showcase the art and humor of this imaginary comic.

All of this in a brilliant but cancelled show that’s about two women living in New York City.  Yet another show that has been on much longer and should in theory be much more positive about comic books fails every time.  That’s right, I’m saying the Bitch did more for comic books than the Big Bang Theory.

Lets be real stereotypical here for simplicity.  Lets say you’re a woman who has never read comics.  One night you watch Don’t Trust and Big Bang.  One showcases a hysterical comic book about two women.  Its well drawn, funny, and has nothing to do with continuity or super heroes.  In fact its pretty definitely not about tights.

The other show makes comic readers and comic shops look like the domains of nuanced obsessed awkward unattractive single men.  Big Bang Theory could make comic shops look like hip coffee shops but instead it puts a black eye on all of nerd-dom.

Love and Rockets, Strangers in Paradise, Tall Slut No Panties.  These are the books to get new fresh faces into comic shops.  Not Amazing Super Dude #1 (Volume 27, Issue 1 yet again).
