There have been many times over wrestling history in which something strange that took place in WWE is believed to be Vince McMahon playing a joke or trying to get back at someone. One of the most famous is the rumor that Dusty Rhodes was put in polka dots as a rib for his time as booker in NWA. Well, last night there was one more.
Brad Maddox as CM Punk. Why? One, if this makes it to TV I’m willing to bet he is called BM Punk. Word from the house show is that he came out to Punk’s music and everything. Brad hasn’t been doing much of late and people constantly wonder if he’s even still with the company. Sounds like a desperate man. The kind of man who would gratefully accept such a dangerous gimmick. He risks alienating not only fans, but the friends of the man he is mocking. Some of those friends are still his co workers.
While its most likely that fans will crap on this and the gimmick will be as accepted as Fake Diesel and Fake Razor, lets just imagine for a moment if the gimmick stuck. When has a rib gotten over and led to money and title reigns? It could make Brad and WWE some quick money but there’s no way this idea survives. Then what? Brad is released and labeled as that guy with the gimmick that mocked another wrestler. Vince wont be the one to deal with any repercussions, Brad will.
And what about CM Punk? Having some doppleganger could effect his MMA career. It certainly would hurt any possibility of him coming back to WWE. Or his wife. Both of whom should go down as all time greats in WWE but are now erased from history.
I may be asking too much but is it wrong to want some class and respect in wrestling?
