Take Van Wilder, the last season of Scrubs and a sitcom web series and you have Resident Advisors.
Klout and Hulu recently teamed up and let me watch the pilot episode early. Short story is I liked it enough to keep going with the entire series. There was some humor that made me laugh a few times and I do like some of the actors (okay, the actresses) and it all gave me enough to go off of to continue on with the show.
That’s the TL;DR of it. Now to some details.
The show opens with a fire alarm. Oh there’s smoke, this is an actual fire. Olivia (Jamie Chung) is freaking out and we who have watched sitcoms before know that she is meant to be the smart one of the bunch. Then there is Douglas who is full naked on Halloween and rubbing genitals in someone’s face while trying to rescue him from the fire. This show could really go either way.
Olivia gets the law laid down for her by the Dean, and we meet the rest of the staff. Tyler loves drugs and seems total blonde surfer type. Amy sneezes and farts at the same time. There’s a water main that someone will hit his/her head on. Foreshadowing! And we learn Douglas has been an RA for 7 years. Now Olivia wants to get him fired, you know, because he’s old.
Douglas runs into his crazy non girlfriend who thinks she is, Marissa. She’s the best part of the show. Batshit crazy, cute, and an actual good actress. More of her please!
Olivia has to tell Amy there are no pets of any kind allowed. Amy has to let her dog go. This little guy now runs around the dorm. Dog humor! Douglas has to figure out a roommate problem, a guy and a girl have been put together because the guy is named Leslie! Sam is going to help Douglas with this. That’s about it for Sam. He becomes Doug’s token assistant. Oh no! Then they find other roommates but cant tell if the potential replacements are men or women. Trans humor? I wouldn’t even call it that.
Back to Tyler, who is hitting on a woman until Olivia interrupts. Then the young lady falls and breaks her vagina. Back to Douglas and he’s trying to figure out if Morgan is a man or a woman, by following Morgan into a bathroom. Now Olivia has her reason to fire him. Oh no!
I’m starting to think Doug is the star of the show and not Olivia.
Everything goes to hell. The dog pooped in the hall, broken-vagina is having a crazy reaction to drugs and the rest of the residents are filming all of these failures. Olivia runs to stop it all and runs into the water main! Foreshadowing!
Douglas talks to his two conflicting roommates by convincing Leslie to say he identifies as a woman. Coincidently the Dean shows up just at this moment. Just as everything comes together! The Dean is with the young potential student and multi millionaire app creator, Beep. Beep loves the idea of trans gender roommates and because of that the Dean loves it too. It all makes sense!
Sam finally has a moment of being an actual character with a nice interaction with Leslie’s roommate. I already forgot her name.
UGH.
Its not the worst show I’ve ever watched. There are some laughs, some fun things, some good actors trying their best. But there is also just the bottom of the barrel jokes that a freshmen writing course would push aside as too childish.
I guess I need to think of who this is for. My best and only idea is this is for kids in high school wondering what the college dorm experience is like. And they will think its this. Very wrongly, but they will think it nonetheless.
Maybe it gets better. Maybe. But the good news is these actors get something to add to their resume and hopefully the experience leads them to greater things.
