“Mom, Dad. I’m a Blogger.”

First of all, I wasted far too much time trying to find the perfect picture for this post.  With no luck.  So you’re just not going to have an image to enjoy here tonight.

Way back when.  Before my wife and I started dating.  Before I moved out.  Before so many things.  I was living at home.  As we all know there are certain things that just happen while living at home that don’t happen when you’re on your own.  Things like watching the local news, national news and then Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune as a family.  Two hours of eating dinner in front of the TV and then just sitting around with an occasional answer blurted out.  Not always a correct answer, but an answer nonetheless.

It was on one of these frequent occasions that Jeopardy had a very specific question.  The question was “this term is shorthand for an internet or web log”.  We all now know that the answer is a blog.  This is a blog, many of you reading this have blogs.

However, as I mentioned this story takes place years in the past.  My mother asked about blogs.  I explained everything.  Its like a personal website.  You can post any of your thoughts or feelings or news or pictures and other people will read them.  I really sell her on the whole idea of a blog.

Or so I thought.

My mom responded with, “well that’s the stupidest thing I ever heard of.  Who would make such a thing?”

Um, mom.  I have one.  Actually I currently have four.  (All of which are now combined onto this site.)

You do?!  Well, does anyone read them?

I average 2000 people reading it a day.  (Again, years ago.)

Once I dropped that number my mom was shocked.  I don’t want to say proud.  More of a good on you, keep at it kid.  If this was a game I would have been told good hustle.

Which brings me to my overall point and question for my fellow bloggers.  How did you come out to your family?  Did they find your site on their own?   Did someone else in the family drop the ball?  Were they excited or dismissive?  We all have had our ups and downs with writing but which end was your family on?

  1. I somehow missed this when it was originally posted, and now I can’t believe there are no replies on it! My mom knows that I have a blog, but she’s never been interested enough to find it. When I first started it, she didn’t have internet and wasn’t the least bit net savvy. Now, however, she has her own Microsoft email account and Verizon FIOS, so you’d figure she’d be inspired to find out what I’m writing about. No dice. Nobody in my family seems to really care. My younger cousin follows me on Instagram, but that’s the extent of it. I have family members on Facebook, where I post links, but I know they’re not reading. So, I’m not still in the closet, but nobody seems to care.
