From Brian Winkeler, Robert Wilson IV, Jordan Boyd, Thomas Mauer, Monkeybrain Comics.
(A digital copy of these issues was provided for review. Also, remember frequent readers we’re still playing catch up here on the site after taking much time off for the new baby. All of these issues are available to buy on http://www.comixology.com/Knuckleheads/comics-series/10340 )
There are so many comic books coming out now from dozens if not hundreds of publishers. If you’re a lone voice out there its important to let yourself be heard. Throw yourself out there to every site. If these guys hadn’t done that I would not have discovered the amazing comic from Monkeybrain, Knuckleheads.
Without the creators’ drive I and other readers wouldn’t be introduced to our new best friend, Trevor K Trevinksi, not quite officially known as the Crystal Fist. You see, Trevor is now the proud owner of what can only be described as alien brass knuckles which are now permanently bonded to his fist. He does what any other 20 something with power would do. He uses it for his own gain. Video games! Netflix! I’m going to guess that many Doritos and Mountain Dews were “purchased” with help from the Crystal as well. Trev lives with his best friend, and keeper of the Crystal Fist secret, Lance. Together in this first adventure they meet other characters steeped in legend. Characters like Pizza Guy, Hot Drunk English Chick, and the villain of the story — Big Alien Dog.
If you haven’t guessed already, this comic is silly and fun as shit. There have been many goofy heroes before. The reluctant slacker type. Major Bummer, Booster Gold and on. However most of those stories have a serious world surrounding the bumbling hero. Not so much in Knuckleheads. This whole thing is fun and crazy.
Trevor is everything you expect and more. Unmotivated, wasted potential. Many of us have heard it all before. Yet he has his best friend, Lance, who is charming as hell. You’ll want to go out for drinks with Lance after reading these issues and even better you’ll want to pay. Just make sure he tells the “Go condom go!” story.
Its such a fun series because every page bursts with some reference to the things we all know and love as geeks. Supporting this book is like supporting one of our own. Jokes that call back to Superman, the Big Lebowski, and more guarantee a smile on every page. Hell, I don’t know if they knew this or not when sending me the comics, but my whole blogging career was started because of Cloverfield. And there are Cloverfield jokes in here!
The first three issues show Trevor pretty much tripping into heroics but its pulled off masterfully. Here’s hoping for many more issues of Knucklehead and much more whimsy from all involved.
