Still no baby!
That’s the only reason I have for being able to post two weeks in a row. Any day that kid is coming out and after that I have no idea when or how or if I can post for a few days and/or weeks. If I totally disappear for awhile you know why. Well, really disappear. It hurts to not write every day but it would hurt a lot more to be an absentee father/husband. But for those of you who don’t know, I will end up being Mr. Mom. Details on that later if you like.
All that out of the way…. Lets get to this week’s topic. Adventures in Craigslist-ing.
As part of getting ready for the little guy I have been selling off a lot of stuff. Over the years I’ve bought tons of junk at thrift shops, garage sales, and bought out my friends’ collections as they moved on to other things. All of this led to a room full of stuff that I like but very few things that I love. Now that I have a wife I love, a son I love and will love even more when he gets here, there needs to be room for all of this love and all of the things needed. Crazy stuff like diapers, crib, and of course I could go on and on. Thus I went through the comics, toys, DVDs, magazines, and more. Anything that wasn’t beloved is gone. I’d rather get the money right away than wait on eBay plus pay shipping and all that malarkey.
I may have made a horrible mistake. Sure, some of the sales have been great. I post something, I get an email back, and a few hours later meet someone outside (or a public place) and get a few bucks for something that would have just sat here for years untouched. Its actually been quite nice to get rid of these things and pass them on to people who I can just tell will enjoy them so much more than me. Plus all the money goes right in the baby fund.
But then there are the people that just piss me right off. For example, I’m selling off the first 9 volumes of the Walking Dead graphic novels. For 50 bucks. I think this is a hell of a deal. These books would cost 3 times as much new. Its the most popular comic and the most popular TV show.
I also realize that so many people see these listings and try to get the best deal possible. Nothing wrong with that. If people were offering 45 or 40 that would be acceptable. But no. “Will you do $20?” “Would you take $15?” No. No I am not taking the price of one brand new one for you to take all nine.
Then there is the lack of reading. I put right in there, “pick up only”. And yet people keep writing. “Will you drive to X?” No! That’s why I said pick up only. I see that it may have been too confusing. By pick up only I met the subtle: Pick. Up. Only.
The worst has been getting rid of 5 comic book long boxes. “Will you give me a list of all the comics in there?” Fuck and No. I’m not listing hundreds of comics for you to pass on it. The whole point of buying long boxes dirt cheap is to go through and find the treasures inside. I’m on attempt 4 to sell them off. I even sweetened the deal and tossed in some comic book magazines and miscellaneous in with it just to avoid the hassle of yet another listing.
It really is going to be worth it to have a clean house and a few bucks more for diapers and adorable onesies. But holy shit this is taking forever.
In other news I’m working hard to catch up on emails. Lots of review comics and interviews and such. Still working way too much at the day job and Elise is still at home preparing for the birth.
I’d love a logo for this column too. Just throwing that out there once again.
And as always if you have a question feel free to ask and maybe inspire next week’s column.

Yay, two in a row! I feel your CL pain. I go through the same junk. Ask for $50 and get an email asking if I’ll take $20. They pull the whole Pawn Stars “Well, I’ve gotta be able to make some money on it.” I do pretty well with longboxes but you can’t have any emotional attachment to them. If they’re books you once loved, you’re screwed. You gotta price the boxes at about ten cents per book so they know it’s about bulk rather than quality. You’ll still get the folks asking for a list, but you’ve just gotta emphasis the nature of the sale. I sold some Pokemon cards a few weeks back – 1300 of them, and one guy want me to send him pics of ALL the cards!
I picture you reading off all 1300 cards much like Chris Jericho reading off his 1000 moves on WCW Nitro. Pokemon #4… arm bar. Pokemon #17… Japanese arm bar.
