From Titan Books, Christopher Shy, Antony Johnston.
The Dead Space trilogy of graphic novels continues with the second volume, Salvage. In this book the Dead Space virus, whatever it is we’re calling it (Necromorphs), has infected the spaceship USG Ishimura. When a group of scavengers called The Magpies discover it the biggest score becomes their greatest nightmare.
For fans of the Dead Space franchise this is a must have. Not much happens to change the story but there is more than enough for fans to enjoy. However, two great tastes sometimes don’t taste great together. Antony Johnston writes a good comic. There are some incredible moments of tension and horror. Christopher Shy has this incredible artistic style that works beautifully in huge panels or splash pages. But their styles don’t really work together.
It doesn’t help any that the story is meaningless in the overall Dead Space story. No new heroes, no answers, and nothing added to the mythology. Its disappointing after the great first book. Not that Dead Space is the first to try something different for a sequel that wasn’t bad but still didn’t work.
For a fan of the series, pick this up as a collection of art or as a novel. And enjoy it like a two for one deal.
