From Titan Books, Ian Edginton, Christopher Shy.
In this third volume of Dead Space tales fan favorite characters John Carver and Ellie Langford team up to discover the truth behind the Markers and try to save all of mankind.
This story is much better than Salvage but not as good as the first volume. The characters are more interesting, and better developed. Their purpose is more clearly defined. All throughout we’re given reasons to actually care about the characters. The weight of their decisions will lead to many “no fucking way” moments.
Christopher Shy’s style is very unique. Very. I cant stress that enough. Once it becomes familiar the details really shine through. However, when first exposed to his art everything seems to be muddied and unrefined. Do yourself a favor and read this book twice. Once for the story and familiarization and again to really see what is going on in Shy’s art.
Ian really gets into this world and seems to bring in more of a video game element into the story. Missions, dark corners, escalating danger. All of the signatures of the modern day game appear on the page. I’ve yet to play the Dead Space games but if someone told me this exact tale is available on disc I’d buy it immediately to see this adventure come to life.
I’d strongly suggest reading through all three graphic novels on a cold dark night and have yourself a good fun scare.
