The League – Collectibles of Tomorrow.

collectiblesoftomorrow

Hey guys, I had a lot to do this week and its getting late.  We’re almost at the weekly cutoff for League posts and I would love to get this written by midnight.  So lets remember what’s going on here.  Brian over at CoolAndCollected.com gives us a weekly question and any geeky blogger who wishes can respond.  Then we all write up answers and share links and its a ton of fun. This week’s topic:

What do you think will be a hot “collectible of tomorrow?”

I have two ideas for you all to debate this week.

TheWalkingDead01

1.  Comics.

Oh sure I know.  Comic books are already a collectible today.  Yes,but what about today’s comics?  Of course the comics older than most of us have some value.  We all know that the over printed 90s books will never be worth more than a dollar.  Then there are the comics of today.  The best sellers (without gimmicks) sell around 100,000 an issue.  Most are in the tens of thousands of copies.  Then there are many independent books that barely if at all crack 10,000 copies sold.  In the post Avengers becoming the #3 movie of all time age we now live in studios are looking for comic books to adapt and merchandise the shit out of then collect tons of money.  If these franchises do become successful the original comics, which weren’t printed in large quantities to begin with, now become worth a lot of money.  For example:   As I’m writing this I found a copy of this graded at 9.8 selling for $1,000 on eBay.  At 11 bids and 5 more days for that number to go up.  Don’t sleep on the next The Walking Dead.  Anytime you see rumors of a show getting picked up or a movie go to development, buy up those comics.  Right now I’d grab up Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy all from the Marvel movie universe.  First SHIELD for ABC’s fall lime up.  Sixth Gun, Powers, and Chew for the independents.  Keep your eyes and ears open to rumors of the next comic book being optioned for film.

2.  DVDs (and even VHS).

Rad sells for $50 on average for a used copy.  Much more if its sealed.  Speaking of sealed, remember when WWF had to change their name to WWE?  Well when that happened anything with a WWF logo on it had to be pulled from retail.  Things are a little more open now, but there are a lot of classic pay per views and documentary releases that either are no longer in print or otherwise have the old logo blurred out and thus making some of these shows unwatchable.  WrestleMania 16 is currently going for $36 on eBay for an opened copy.  Just because of that WWF logo.  Most other opened WWE DVDs can be found for about 5 bucks on eBay or Amazon.  Then there are the subtle differences on these tapes and discs due to lawsuits, copyrights, and more.  Music missing off of classic TV shows.  The Muppet Family Christmas cant be released now with the Muppets under Disney and Sesame Street over at CTN.  Try finding an unedited copy of Tex Avery’s Magical Maestro cartoon (Opera Dog).  I wouldn’t stock up on unsold copies of Phantom Menace, but anytime there’s a court case or buyout it might be worth taking a look through the bargain bins and goodwills.

What does the rest of the League want you to invest in?

  1. Great post Kevin! I wish I had a full run of the Walking Dead–if not for the value, ant least I’d know what was coming in next week’s episode!

Thanks for the insight into the DVDs. There are probably plenty of those floating around at the used movie stores and yard sales, just waiting to be found.
