From Image Comics and JM Ringuet
My first encounter with JM Ringuet’s work came with issue #0 of Hoax Hunters. While I wasn’t hot on the issue, I could recognize a great talent, regardless, and through weeks of hype on his twitter account (@jmringuet), Repossessed is finally here! This book combines action with occultism, and a blue-collar group of heroes hell bent on repossessing bodies from demons one at a time.
As the book opens, we’re introduced to our heroes; Joe, the researcher and charm collector, always ready with an incantation; Clay, a man with a unique arsenal that he makes himself, and also, the representative muscle of the group; and Martha, the woman with the plan and keen ability to sniff out the possessed. Together they’re a part of an agency called the DEE Agency, who specialize in forcing the demonic out. As bad ass as they are, the opening sequence involves the team bursting into a church during service and exorcising the demon affecting the man at the pulpit. A “major” one as they call it. Their unique aesthetic and methods for forcing demons out are great; full of quirk and action.
The agency is called upon to repossess a girl named Sarah Gold, a law student who gives it up to pursue club singing. They are hired by her father, who is fully convinced that she is possessed. The crew tracks down leads in Las Vegas and Dallas, including a run in with a biker gang that shows signs of demonic activity. And in Dallas, let’s just say that our heroes find themselves in a sticky situation by the end of the issue.
JM’s art is fantastic. I’ve always liked the style and here, under his own terms, he brings it full circle into a high concept story that fit’s his style to the T. His art is one of the more unique styles, but it’s also one that you’re either going to love or hate. The story is well researched in its demonic facts and anthropomorphic representations, complete with an interesting tidbit about one of the demons that appears in this book, at the end of the issue. The aesthetics of the story, and just the little things are a lot to admire; from Clay’s ammunition, to the way the group functions to bind a spirit, to the world that it’s set it in. If you’re a fan of the show Supernatural and movies like The Expendables, you’re going to love this book. January is off to a good start with Repossessed!
