From 5th World Studios, Michael Moreci, Keith Burns, Jim Campbell, Chris Beckett, and Tim Daniel
Fresh off of a Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $10,000, Michael Moreci (Hoax Hunters, Quarantined) released the first issue of ReincarNATE in the beginning of December, 2012. The book centers around Nate McCoy, a P.I. not well respected among the policing community. Upon returning to his apartment, he walks in on an intruder and is lured down an alley, taken out by a sniper. Only, the sniper didn’t count on Nate surviving.
At the start of the book, the reader is treated to one of the best synopses in comics. It carries the impact of the four panel origin story of Superman in All Star Superman. It’s a beautiful lament on death for a character who has experienced it twice already, and fails to do so a third time. Moreci paints death as an unexpected surprise, and in this case, the lack of it certainly is. Keith Burns affirms this with impactful art as Nate ponders the subject upon a precipice, overlooking the city.
As Nate wakes up from the impact and surgery, he’s greeted by two individuals; a cowboy and a man with glasses and attire, right out of the 1960’s. Truth is, he’s lucky as hell. It’s not very often that you hear of a head shooting victim without a head wound. But that’s what Nate is, and now he has two hitchhikers along for the ride. He’s a miracle of sorts with a new sense of purpose, and a name, El Panda.
The first issue of ReincarNATE starts out with a great premise, great story telling, and sets the direction of the story quite well. Moreci proves over and over again that he is one of the great, underrated writers in comics today. Every story that he writes just proves that he is a mainstay in comics for years to come. Of equal praise, Burns grasps the concept of the book quite well, and goes places with it. ReinarNATE is a book that everyone needs to be checking out!
