As Locke & Key begins its run toward the end (hopefully as slow as possible), its a bittersweet moment for fans. Not only have they been dying to get their hands on the new arc, but these issues come with tears, as the story is coming to an end with its “Omega” arc. A fitting title to a comic that is gargantuan in style and concept, but in its story as well. The last arc, “Clockworks,” took a detour from the story, exploring Keyhouse’s past, going back to colonial times, all the way up to Rendell’s time in the house. The arc previous to this, “Keys to the Kingdom,” ended with Tyler and “Dodge” finally meeting head on, and the demon moving into Bode, undetected.
The first issue in the “Omega” story arc begins with Bode, unchecked, unchallenged, and really big, as he retrieves the crown of shadows, inching closer to using the omega key and unleashing all sorts of hell. While that’s going on, Scot Kavanaugh is filming seniors, asking the question, “what would you tell yourself if you had the chance to go back and talk to the younger you.” This provides for a hauntingly poignant moment for any fan of the series. Kinsey and Tyler get a little more personal with their confessions, giving us the meaning behind the issues’ title “Our Regrets.” The issue ends with the possibility of a thwart, as “Dodge” has a follower in the cave.
What makes this series great, you may wonder? It’s Hill and Rodriguez, first and foremost. Hill’s writing is so tight, even the tiniest details create the biggest payoffs and make for the greatest chills. Gabe’s command of Keyhouse, its nooks and crannies, and of the emotional impact of this story leaves me pondering each issue, long after the pages have been read. It’s rare to see a creative team this good in comics. The greatest comics are created by a team, not just an individual. When you see it, opening that first page…”Locke & Key created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez,” you know this is on a whole different, better level. Grab the tissues, its almost over.
