Review of Charismagic The Death Princess #1 from Aspen Comics.

From Aspen Comics, Vince Hernandez, Emilio Lopez.

This next tale in the larger story of Charismagic focuses on the Death Princess herself, Orlana.  In the forever unanswered question of nature vs nurture there is no debate after the first pages of this book.  Orlana is nothing but bad and she will cause trouble for any being or collective in her way.

The stunning part of this issue is how unexpectedly vast this world has become.  The first Charismagic series was deceptively simple.  What started as a small story grew exponentially and provided glimpses of this larger world.  The Death Princess throws fans right into that larger world, and not to spoil the book but there might be a familiar name at some point in the story.

Vince Hernandez must have shelves upon shelves full of the details he works into this book, along with Emilio Lopez.  The variety of characters is huge.  From humans to beasts to monsters and even dinosaurs.  All of which are very familiar and yet fresh as well.  The clothing and armor creations are even bigger.  The creators have designed uniforms, fashions, and accessories that all make sense.  I’ve already gone back three times just to take in all the details.

All of this plus an amazing story around this new character.  Orlana may be the most dangerous woman to ever grace an Aspen Comic.  That’s saying a LOT from a company known for their incredible women.  Orlana is as stunning as she is dangerous.  This is the type of woman that men follow despite knowing better.  Her beauty and confidence, the gorgeous aura that bleeds through the page, will lead many to fall at her feet.  (Under all meanings.)

Then there is the character of Kon.  The mage, the failed hero, the quest for redemption.  He’s only one character and there’s enough to do 100 issues about him alone.  He is both incredibly powerful and incredibly weak.  I have my fingers crossed that Kon’s overall story will constantly engross me.  Aspen has never let me down, and I don’t expect them to start here.

While at your favorite comic book shop don’t worry about the constant reboots from other companies.  Grab Charismagic The Death Princess.  Any fan of magic, of swords and sorcery, of great female characters, of world building will find a new favorite comic book.
