Top 4 of NXT 8/15/12

Despite the fact that there actually was about 20 minutes of wrestling in this show, the wrestling for the most part was underwhelming. When I debated putting a Heath Slater vs. Scotty 2 Hotty match onto the Top 4 you know I was kind of wondering what happened. As the tournament progressed the matches… didn’t. Sure, they are actually all taped in one night for the three weeks of tournaments, but I don’t believe it was exhaustion that made these wrestlers tired. Staying off the list this week, besides Slater and Scotty, were Steamboat and Mahal. The commentators keep talking about how quick Steamboat is and I just never see this quickness from him. Mahal and Steamboat both need someone better than them in the ring as an opponent and neither had the opportunity this episode.

4. Michael McGillicutty vs. Seth Rollins

This is the match that was almost switched out for Slater and Scotty 2 Hotty, however this did more for the ongoing plot of NXT than Slater losing did. McGillicutty is brilliant and Rollins had a few moves that looked more fluid than his last few matches. Rollins swiftly moved through the ending and won against McGillicutty in a way that had me impressed. But for a six minute match there was not a lot happening besides the spots.

3. Hunico and Camacho Interview

Matt Striker gets a few moments with Hunico and Camacho and hilarity ensues. First, I commend Striker on actually trying to, you know, interview as opposed to asking one question and just letting the superstars steamroll over to deliver a monologue. This was an actual interaction and won points for that. Hunico defends why they lost to Mike Dalton and Jason Jordan. He had the stomach flu, he had a 170 degree fever, Camacho’s donkey died. “I don’t have a burro.” It was a fun segment and goes hand-in-hand with the week before when Dalton and Jordan could hardly contain their excitement.

2. Leo Kruger Interview

Briley Pierce interviews the self-proclaimed king of Africa and… weirdness ensues. Did Kruger just pull his tooth out? Why is he speaking like that? Did he go off the deep end? Can I see more, please? Apparently just being bat-shit crazy is the new thing in WWE (that and beards, beards are suddenly quite popular). I’m okay with this, and I enjoy Kruger in any capacity he’s working, so let’s see more.

1. Ascension vs. The Usos

No, I didn’t put this at number one just because Ascension was in it. (It didn’t hurt, though). Ascension were due a match that they could actually show off their skills in. They have all that is needed to make a great tag team, so why not actually show off their talent? Though about four and a half minutes in time, it was enough. Jimmy and Jey Uso work well off of Kenneth Cameron and Conor O’Brian and between the four it was quite the entertaining match. However, the ending was a bit contrived for my liking, but the match itself was so enjoyable and I can’t fault the wrestlers for a bad disqualification call.
