The Dark Knight Rises and Today’s Shooting Tragedy.

We’re not an international news site, nor do we try to be.  Myself, Rob, Solace and everyone else who contributes to this site or is a friend of this site come here for fun.  We love comics and wrestling and music and movies.  And comic book movies.

I know Solace saw the movie last night.  Rob and I are seeing it sometime this weekend (not together, different towns and all).  That is what gets me about this.  Well, so many things are upsetting me about this.

One, it could have been any one of us.  Crazy people live everywhere.  Elise and I debated on going to a midnight showing here.  Sweet Matty Treats went to an IMAX marathon of all three movies.  CrysLewis has stayed in a line all night for her geekiness.  Solace actually was at a midnight showing as well.  It could have been any of us.

Two, it is a horrible hit to the fans.  One of the beautiful things we’ve discovered through the community of wrestling and comic book fans is that it is a family.  We can go to a Con anywhere in the country and make instant friends with people we have never met.  When any one of us is at a mall or out to eat or anywhere in public and we see another person wearing a comic or wrestling shirt there is that knowing smile and nod.  We have a unique and close community.  Members of that community are the type who stand in line for hours upon hours.  The type that will go without sleep just so they can be the first to see a movie.  The victims of this tragedy are members of our community and it is a horrible hit to that community.

Three, its Batman.  The man who became a hero because his parents were killed leaving a movie theater.  There were children in this theater.  Some of those kids are now dead.  Some of those kids are possibly without one if not both parents now.  These kids, these kids at heart too, wanted to see a movie about a man who has tragedies occur and then rises above them to become the World’s Finest.  And now it is the worst day of their lives.  For the rest of their lives, in stores, on TV, everywhere — they will see Batman products and it will remind them of this tragedy.

Four, the best thing about the modern day is that everyone is aware of everything instantly.  The worst thing about the modern day is that everyone is aware of everything instantly.  There is video of people running out of the theater.  You may not be able to watch it.  Very upsetting.  No, no link here.  But its out there.  Then there is Jessica Redfield.  A great blogger with a long and successful career in front of her.  Until last night.  We can see the last thing she ever wrote.  Excited tweets from the theater.  A fun night out.  We all know what happened after.

Five, we are all prepared for a possible shit storm attacking our world.  This is not about comics, cosplayers, movie fans, geeks, or anything else.  This is about one crazy fuck.  He does not represent one of us.  Not a one.  We will still love to read and watch the eternal battle between good and evil.  We will still write, draw, and create in any medium.  Marilyn Manson did not cause Columbine and Batman did not cause this shooting.

I have hundreds of other thoughts on this but I’ll stop for now.  If you would like to comment, or if you just want to have a place to leave your own thoughts by all means go ahead.  Be respectful, be supportive.  I called all of us fans a community.  Lets show that its a good one.
