So We’re Starting a Movie/Book Club. “Been Meaning To”.

(picture is from a Greg Hatcher column over at Comics Should Be Good.  I picked it for two reasons.

http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/author/greg-hatcher/

One, its a prettier picture than what I can take right now of my own home library.  Two, I will take any excuse to draw more eyes to his column.  One of my favorite things to read each and every week.)

We here at Team Hellions have decided to start a book and movie club.  The name of this group is the “Been Meaning To” book/movie club.  As in, hey have you watched/read that yet?  No, but I’ve been meaning to.

Well now is your chance!  My desire to do this came about from this week’s League of Extraordinary Bloggers.  The League is given a weekly question, and this past was to confess sins in your geekiness.  I confessed to not reading nor watching certain iconic titles.  Other League members had their own gaps of knowledge.  I thought maybe it would be a good thing to have some sort of club for all of this.

Other Hellions joined up for this idea and we will start on June 1st.  One book and one movie a month.  You can do one, or  both.  They will be the titles for the entire month.  When you have something to say about it, write it up (or video, or podcast, whichever your preferred blogging may be).  All posts are your property, but will also be put up on the site with full credit to you.  Double the exposure!  You get to create a new post for your blog, and get the hits and new traffic from featuring it on Team Hellions as well.

Don’t have a blog, but still want to participate?  No worries.  Send me an email and I’ll post it for you!  Send it to teamhellions(at)gmail(dot)com

Super easy!

Speaking of easy, the titles will be easy for you to get your hands on too.  Books will be available, if not in mass market, at least very cheap to buy.  Movies will be on Netflix and easy to find DVDs.

The point is to read those books and watch those movies that we have sitting in our collections and have been meaning to get around to but never did so.

Rob has provided a list of possible titles.  Mine have been added to that list.  You can comment and add your own and we will decide the first title in the next couple days.

This is just an off the top of the head list.  From classics to new, we want to do everything.  Let me know if you’ll read digitally too and maybe we can get something going with a new writer.  Promote some e-books on here too.  If people are interested that is.

Again, we’re just starting the list.  There are hundreds if not thousands of titles that we can put in here.

There is a possibility of combining book with movie adaptation down the road.  Also, there may be theme months.  But lets get through this first month.

  1. With the movie list, might I suggest putting the years (since there is a God Awful remake of Godzilla) and ratings and possible genres? Especially since Clockwork Orange has a sensitive subject to it even if they pulled it off in a way that played it down. (I’ve also never understood the love for that movie, hated it!)

  2. Solace, that is an excellent point. With many of the books/movies I should be clear which version I mean.

  3. Brian, I have Lonesome Dove in my personal to read pile. And I will read a Sackett’s story once a year.

  4. I know that ‘True Grit’ is in my library, along with ‘The Searchers.’ There are a ton more but I didn’t want to overwhelm. As for movies The Godfather, Moon (Free on YouTube), Blade Runner, Seven Samuri, Citizen Kane, French Connection, The Pianist.

    • Damn, we’re going to have quite the list here. I think I’ll add a banner and all for this, keep it all together and make it easy for anyone new to find.

  5. I am beside myself at the fact there is not a single dragon story on here. SIGH.

    My suggestions:

    Books:

Neverwhere – Neil Gaiman (MY FAVORITE)
The Forever War – Joe Haldeman
The Heir Trilogy – Cinda Williams Chima
Games of Thrones! – George R. R. Martin
Legend of The Seeker: Wizard’s Frist Rule (the books are way better) -Terry Goodkind
    Survivors – James Wesley Rawles

    Movies:

    Equilibrium
Escape to Witch Mountain (original disney version)
    Young Frankenstein
    Edward Scissorhands
    Sunshine
    Moon
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Ok, I can’t think of anymore off the top of my head. But, thoughts on these?

    • You know, I can honestly say, other than ‘The Hobbit’, there is no dragon like tale that I find appealing. D&D has some great stuff, but I don’t need to go to those ends of geekery.

      • Hahaha, I know quite a few geeks that just give me the hairy eyebrow when bringing up dragons. Hate to say it, but D&D geeks aren’t the same kind of geeks as those who embrace Dr. Who.
