Record Review: ‘My Head Is an Animal’ by Of Monsters and Men

At the first aural experience of Of Monsters and Men, particularly their EP, “Into the Woods,” the band delivered an Icelandic indie folk sound that had a lot of potential. The band displayed a lot of organic and earthy tones and featured a pair of dueling vocalists; Nana Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar “Raggi” Pórhallson add to a stunning formula that for it’s large ensemble, has a smaller sound. While those four tracks on the EP did dazzle, in a full album setting, the band stick their tongue out a bit and show you what they’ve been eating.

Of Monsters and Men are a band that wear their influences on their sleeves. You can hear a wide variety of bands here like Mumford & Sons, Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, and The Head and the Heart. That’s not to say they’re mere copy cats, this is a band that’s comfortable among great company and with itself. It explores sonic textures through those influences, but it’s never completely stolen, earned ever more through every listen.

The album’s first single, “Little Talks” is a beautiful back and forth that feels very much like a Dropkick Murphys’ song. It has a celtic type melody, sustained by trumpets and a squeeze box. “King and Lionheart” is the best Florence + the Machine song that she never recorded. It builds and builds and is sustained by a heart beating kick drum. “Love Love Love” is one of the records’ darkest songs; it’s melody is played by a simple acoustic guitar and the lyrics pertain to a person who can’t love another. It’s sad and tragic nature make it a great stand out.

This record is far from flawless, certainly the melodies get repetitious at times (“Sloom”) and the influences hinder a bit, but for a debut it’s really solid. Embrace the simplicity and the influences, it will be a more rewarding experience for you.
