The Smarked for Death Wrestling Review for WWE Raw 4/16/12.

We are live!  Um, scratch that.  We are taped earlier today from London!  But that doesn’t mean there wont be good matches tonight right?!  Lets see.

Damn. Starts right off with a WWE Title match.  Mark Henry vs. CM Punk (champ, for those that don’t know) and its a No DQ, no count outs no other stuff kind of match.

Mark Henry is already in the ring though, and gets no musical introduction.  Well that cant be a good sign.

Some real fun wrestling in this match.  To watch, the two men look to be in quite a bit of pain.  Punk runs the ring wall and hits a bulldog.  He damn sure ran further than Jeff Hardy does with a similar move.  Probably thanks to that drug free lifestyle.  Mark throws Punk into that same wall later on and controls most of the match from there.  Good amount of violence, some open rules for the match and a steel chair.  Its not only a good match, but its also getting over the concept for the upcoming PPV.

CM Punk shows that a great guy with talent can beat a good guy with strength.  He gets out of the World’s Strongest Slam and hits a nasty savate kick.  Mark tries to regain control of the match and runs into the chair that got set up in the corner nearly 10 minutes ago that everyone had forgotten about.  Punk comes off the top rope with the same chair, and both land on Mark’s face for the pin.  If only it was the time keeper’s bell.  Alas, we can hope for a feud against Richie Steamboat.

Punk celebrates his win and Chris Jericho appears not only on the TitanTron but also appears at a bar as well.  Well, what we are told is a bar.  Its very obviously a quick and cheap set.  It looks like the contents of the hotel mini bar were placed on a shelf.  Jericho announces a WWE title match against Punk, at Extreme Rules, and it will be a Chicago Street Fight.  Ohhhhh, I hope that means Colt Cabana can get involved!

Jericho shows video of Punk going to a bar.  Punk claims he was just having lunch with a friend.  Its alright, but easily explained and doesn’t have the drama that previous weeks have held.  We all suspect Jericho is in the building.  His video is falling flat, but hopefully he appears in person and something more exciting will happen tonight.

R-Truth is portraying Sherlock Holmes.  It is as bizarre to see as it was to type.  He is trying to “find” a job for Teddy Long.  Thankfully the segment lasts just as short as needed.

Santino comes out and wears 5 wrong jerseys before unveiling the correct one to get a good pop from the London crowd.  Well done, different, and lets see how many shirts he wears in every town from now on.  I’d love to see him walk into Boston with a Yankees shirt on.

Santino Marella (US Champion) vs. David Otunga.

I have faith that Santino will carry David to a good match here.  Even though he’s such a great comedy wrestling, people forget that Santino can actually wrestle quite well.  Otunga knows how to use his power, but lets see what other skills he can employ.  I’m not sure if I’m impressed or discouraged with Otunga.  He knocks Santino down and goes for the strangest cover you’ve seen.  Then Santino gets his foot on the bottom rope and you realize the booking reason for the strange pin.  Santino comes back while Otunga debates the three count with the referee.  One Cobra to victory.  Otunga did really well, and the only problem he had – getting into position – is something that will come more naturally to him the longer he wrestles.

Lord Tensai cuts a forgettable promo.

Brock Lesnar hype piece.  I’m as excited to see Brock as most of the WWE Universe is.  However, he quit.  He left because he didn’t want to have to deal with the WWE schedule.  John Cena has been in every town, every PPV, for that entire time Brock was gone.  Also, where are the mentions of his illustrious career with the Vikings?

Zack Ryder vs. Kane.

Well let this be a lesson to anyone who tries to get over on their own and without WWE’s approval.  I swear WWE loves taking people the fans are starting to love, again – on their own, and bury them so the fans don’t give a shit anymore.  Kane destroys Ryder and the match never officially starts.  All of this is to challenge Randy Orton to another match.  Again, poor Zack.

Kofi Kingston talks to AJ about comics or video games or something.  Daniel Bryan shows up and gives them both some shit.  Bryan’s finisher is now called the “Yes Lock”  Well that is just beyond fucking awesome.  Its one of the dumbest, most ridiculous and also greatest ideas in WWE in recent memory.

John Cena comes out to address Brock’s speech from earlier tonight.  Pretty much it was nearly 10 minutes of John saying that he will fight.  Oh good, I thought I had turned into a dance show.  John Laurinatis comes out just to say that he will put Cena into matches to mess with him.  Also there’s a three hour Raw next week.  None of these are given any reason to happen.  They just are happening, so deal with it I guess.

Sherlock Truth walks through a hidden door.  Hornswoggle is at a loss for words.  The words of Leonard F Chikarason ring in my ears.  If you heard about a strong tough black man from the streets, who talks to an invisible white boy, and then dresses as Sherlock Holmes, what company would you think you were watching?

Daniel Bryan vs. Kofi Kingston.

Great match.  I love seeing Kofi against someone who he can go crazy with.  Kofi isn’t good enough yet to call a match, but when he’s in there with someone who gets him and can lead a match Kofi looks like the next main event star.  AJ is watching from a monitor in the back.  She must be WWE’s most popular Diva right now, right?  Bryan has brought the word “Yes” to a new level in WWE.  Damn near every offensive move is punctuated with the scream of yes.  Daniel wins with the Yes Lock and that has to be the match of the night.

Daniel locks on the Yes Lock once again but Sheamus runs out for the save.  Extreme Rules is looking to possibly be better than WrestleMania.  Will be interesting to see what else is added to the show.

Its a damn shame Brodus Clay is in captivity.  Cant he run free and wild with the other Funkasauruses?

Brodus Clay vs. Dolph Ziggler (with Vickie Guerrero and Jack Swagger).

Without a doubt, Brodus’s biggest challenge to date.  It will also go away in telling the fans how well Dolph is currently perceived.  Future world champion or dinosaur chowder?  Swagger tries to save Dolph, but Clay throws them both around.  The match gets thrown out.  The Funkettes try to mess with Vickie but she knocks them on their asses.  She then barely escapes from Funky Girl 1 and Funky Girl 2.  I’ll learn their names once I’m convinced it matters.

Eve sets up a meeting with Johnny and David goes in to watch.  I hope he has enough coffee!

Tribute to Chief Jay Strongbow.

Truth Holmes suggests Teddy Long be the GM of Smackdown.  This whole angle is now a colossal waste of time.

The Big Show (Intercontinental champion) and the Great Khali, also known as worst plane ride ever vs. Epico and Primo (WWE Tag Team Champions, with Rosa Mendes).

Rosa walks, dances, and stands like no human ever born actually does.  Her sexiness looks like a seizure.  “AW” or as we know him, Abraham Washington, comes out to scout talent.  I’ll predict all of this ends with him bringing in a brand new talent to WWE.  The champions grab the titles and run away.  Big Show catches them and throws them back in the ring.  Chops and dual slams.  Both men get pinned.  And its still non title?!  Way to make the tag team titles worth something!

Look, I get it, the belts are props.  But cant props mean something?  Not worth anything so far this week – the tag titles and the Divas title.  Hell, tonight the whole Diva division.

John Cena vs…..??? Lord Tensai!

Johnny Ace and David Otunga hang out at ringside.  Tensai is looking good and this will be very interesting.  Its also an Extreme Rules match.  I wouldn’t expect any blood but there could be some interesting things afoot.  Steel steps, Lord Tensai’s second kicks Cena a few times.  Otunga rolls him back into the ring.  This is just not Cena’s night.  Its mostly Tensai’s match.  Cena starts a comeback and you get a sense of just how big Tensai is.  John Cena is by no means a small man and yet Tensai towers over him.

Great use of outside interference here.  Cena has Tensai in the STF.  Otunga runs in to distract Cena.  Tensai spits the green mist in Cena’s eyes and takes advantage with a pin.  Sure its cheating, but Lord Tensai still looks strong and gets a huge victory.

The lesser titles need something going for them, but the main event level is the hottest its been in awhile.  Overall I’m calling Raw a win.
