We learned this week that amazing powerhouse wrestler Kia Stevens (AKA Awesome Kong, Kharma) lost her baby son before the birth.
Every time I try to write the next sentence my fingers hover for about ten seconds over the keyboard as it is difficult to express my sorrow for her. I can’t imagine losing your child right before birth, that the anticipation of joy turned into inescapable sorrow for Kia and her family.
It was also reported that she told people that the birth was successful. While some people might find this bizarre, to me it makes perfect sense. In our media saturated, reality television, over sharing world Kia wanted private time to grieve, as any mother should. She needed time to curl into herself, to take care of herself, to deal with the pain of loss without the intrusion of paparazzi or even WWE fans.
In some ways it is also difficult to contemplate because I don’t have children of my own. However that does not prevent me from showing compassion. In fact, this kind of tragedy was a part of my family, as well as part of the lives of a few friends. I think she is making an incredibly kind gesture in forming an organization to bring awareness to still births, which is imperative in this current social-political environment with so much turmoil over women’s reproductive rights. Kia (and her family) lost a much wanted, much loved child, as have so many other women and families. I feel that using her visibility to help others deal with this loss will go far in also helping to provide her support and comfort.
That being said, if or when Kia returns to the WWE I hope that the entire locker room comes out and shows her love, respect, and support (My assumption is that this is a “when” being that she was a Royal Rumble entrant). She deserves, if nothing else, a standing ovation. I also hope this does not become some sort of punch line shat from an ‘angry’ Diva’s mouth (or even Michael Cole’s). In my opinion this is just one ‘real’ life event that the WWE writers should leave alone, or that the WWE helps promote her cause.
Until then, I will patiently wait for Karma to come back to the WWE and give the Diva’s division a much needed shake up. In her own time, at her own pace.
She is a truly amazing and strong woman in every sense of the word.
