Record Review: ‘Breakfast’ by Chiddy Bang

Indie rap has been a developing genre for many years, but has been home to great acts like Das Racist, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Aesop Rock. The latest and greatest edition to the genre is Chiddy Bang, a group that hit the scene in 2010 with an MGMT sampling track for “The Opposite of Adult.” Since then, they’ve been hanging with Keith Richards, being hyped by Kanye, and setting world records. In their major label debut, this rap group has added something new and unique to the cannon of rap.

If there is such a genre as pop rap, this is it; aided by the production of Noah “Xaphon Jones” Beresin, the album blends elements of pop, rap, and hip-hop in a compelling manner. The album’s cover art is practically a seller on it’s own, and will have you believing in it’s value as the most important meal of the day.

The album is full of stand out tracks that will have you singing along, including the latest single “Ray Charles.” The song was inspired by member, Chiddy’s brother, who fell asleep with his sunglasses on while being high. From that, this fantastic single was made, complete with funny lyrics, and a soul breakdown that will have you singing along. “Breakfast” is the album’s strongest track, combining unique guitar sounds, trumpet blares, and a great piano rhythm: Chiddy bellows, “they think they steppin’ up? They on the stair master.”

If you’re still listening to mainstream crap, like Watch the Throne, drop that shit quick and get Breakfast. It’s genuine, original, and tastes like the best breakfast you’ve ever had.
