Consider the Playlist: Dealing with the Winter Blues

Winter sucks, for most people, and is the one season that will induce clinical depression, if you believe that. Despite that, here is a little winter playlist to help you deal with this time of year.

1. Vampire Weekend – “Horchata”

I’ve never had horchata, but I hear it’s delicious. It may take a substance to cope with this time of year, whether it’s alcohol or horchata. Plus, Vampire Weekend are so whimsical, how can you now love it!

2. Bayside – “Winter”

Winter will always be associated with death, and this song is no different (R.I.P. John Beatz). However, there is always hope with Raneri “for the sun to come and melt this snow, wash away the pain, and give me back control.”

3. Jack & White – “XYZ”

The most winter-y sounding song you’ll ever hear about the hand life deals you. The duo of Jack Matranga and Brooke White have that rare chemistry that say, M. Ward and Zoey Deschenel, or Mary Ford and Les Paul have. Can’t wait for a full length from this duo.

4. Bobby Long – “A Winter Tale”

Long is one of the most poetic songwriters you’ll ever hear, fronting an almost new Bob Dylan revolution. Long’s instrumentation creates the feel of someone in a storm, and the lyrics are just beautiful and lonely.

5. Neil Young – “Winterlong”

What’s a winter playlist without a song about cocain right? Despite that, It captures the feel of this particular time of year quite wonderfully. Young’s less is more style, coupled with the pedal steel make for purse sadness.

6. The Wilderness of Manitoba – “Winterlude”

This short track provides a short break from the playlist; could there be a better band to capture the winter season without words?

7. Mumford & Sons – “Winter Winds”

If you’ve ever entered a relationship to avoid being alone during the winter season, then this song is for you. The only thing about this sad tragic figure is that he’s not able to fall in love with this person. The wistful feel of the song captures the feeling of the season, along with the subject at heart.

8. The Pogues featuring Kirsty McColl – “Fairytale in New York”

Most may remember this song from P.S. I Love You, but alone, this is a fantastic song, that is more about a love obsession with New York City than it is over a relationship. It’s the perfect Irish winter song.

9. Fleet Foxes – “White Winter Hymnal”

Fleet Foxes have some of the most beautiful harmonies, and on “White Winter Hymnal,” it’s just a joy to listen to them work. This fairly meaningless song repeats itself over and over again, but conveys a lovely winter scene.

10. The Avett Brothers – “January Wedding”

Terminal conditions and weddings may not seem like such a great combo but in this song, it’s bittersweet and tragic. One can infer from the lyrics that this person has terminal cancer, but they’ll always be together if they’re married.

11. matt pond PA – “Snow Day”

Who didn’t love snow day’s in school, while this song has been featured in commercial’s, no song pays homage to winter-y weather as much and as well as this one does.

12. Neutral Milk Hotel – “In an Airplane Over the Sea”

Carefree and brilliant, this ballad gives a free feeling to winter with no strings attached, no worries to take in, just enjoy it, and as the last song on the playlist, it’s important not to let this time of year get to you! (Not to mention there are saws being played on this!)
