Record Review: “As the Crow Flies” by Amos Lee

While these songs may be left overs from the Mission Bell sessions of 2010, on their own they are equally as compelling as the full length from which they were born. Aside from the fact that Lee may be the most badass artist on the Blue Note label; his influences feel like someone that doesn’t belong, but on it’s own, the music’s organic feel would be happy to have a home on any label.

The EP’s imagery is similar to Mission Bell, and in the background one can see a bell tower to reference it’s original work. “Simple Things” is derived from Hall & Oates, but feels like it could have come straight from a Fleetwood Mac album. “Say Goodbye’s” upbeat country tempo and Ben Harper lyrical delivery system, make a compelling argument for a pure Harper country album. The highlights are found within Lee’s balladry, cuts like “May I Remind You” and “Mama Sail to Me” combine the singer/songwriter and country genres together into something amazing. If you’re a fan of Amos Lee, you can’t pass this up.
