Loving, Accepting or Hating Comic Book Movies.

Earlier today, my friend and yours – Rob, asked me what comic book based films are the best.  Phew.  That’s a tough, and big question.  First off, best implies so much.  Things I love are not always loved by others, and you can flip that as well.  All I can comment on is my own opinion.  I’ve divided the movies into three categories.  First are the ones I love.  The ones that make me feel childlike excitement every time I watch them.  Second are the acceptable ones.  They’re fun but not perfect.  I love them as a fan of all things comic, but if a couple years passed without watching these movies I wouldn’t be too hurt.  Finally are the ones I hate.  These movies had me yelling at the screen in anger.  Either as I watched it the first time, or as a more intelligent adult.  The movies where I feel like everything went wrong.

Love: Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2, Batman, Dark Knight, Mask of Phantasm, Scott Pilgrim, Captain America, Thor, X-Men First Class, Spider-Man 2, Iron Man, Crow, Watchmen, Hellboy 1 and 2, Justice League New Frontier, The Mask, Sin City, All Star Superman, V for Vendetta

Accept: 30 Days of Night, 300, AVP, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman Begins, Under the Red Hood, Gotham Knights, Blade series, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 3, X-Men, X-2, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Daredevil, Fantastic Four 1 and 2, Ghost Rider, Green Lantern, Hulk VS, Planet Hulk, Kick Ass, Losers, 2 most recent Punishers, Spawn,

(X-Men The Last Stand and X-Men Origins Wolverine are in between these two stages. I like both movies, but there are a lot of things that piss me off in both.)

Hate: Batman and Robin, Superman 3, Superman 4, Superman Returns, Hulk, Catwoman, LXG, Dolph Punisher, Wanted

The ones I love, I will probably always love.  Accept could go either way.  But the hate?  I could go off for far too long on each of these movies and why I don’t like them.  I think LXG and Wanted were the most upsetting.

Questions and comments are welcome.  Share your own lists, ask  me how I came to these opinions, etc.

I probably forgot some too.  We’ll just have to edit those in later.

  1. I agree with you on most, or would mix up the love and accept a bit more. Your only choice really I flat out disagree with: Spider-Man. I hated the movies. I loved the comics and the cartoon and some of the novels (especially Jim Butcher’s The Darkest Hour) but the movies: Tobey was fine, but Kirsten Dunst was ill-fitted for Mary Jane and the pacing was so slow. And I’m saying this as a fan of Kirsten Dunst. Anyway, otherwise, great list compiled and it will help those who have not see some of those movies sit back and say, “Well, now how did I miss that?” Or miss that it was based off of a comic.
