Ghost Rider #8 Review.

My least favorite Marvel comic returns!  But its so bad I have to read it just to see how bad it gets.  Maybe I even hope that something good will happen.

Unfortunately that still hasn’t happened. So here’s what is happening.  Hawkeye has fired an arrow into the chest of our new female Ghost Rider.  She’s newly the Ghost Rider, she’s been a woman for a while I’m guessing.  Maybe even since birth.  Its going to be okay though, Hawkeye attached a mystic amulet to the arrow, and its not killing Ghost Rider, its only gently massaging her heart and impeding the demon from coming out.  Meanwhile, the Steel Sisters are dragging Johnny Blaze between their motorcycles and are about to drive him into a train.  Just wait.  So Hawkeye rescues Blaze, and the Steel Sisters don’t know who one of the biggest Avengers and thus biggest super heroes in their world is, so they’re convinced his name is Ted Nugent.  Yeah.  Ghost Rider removes the arrow before the brink of death and now its her turn to rescue Hawkeye and Blaze, who the Sisters are now dragging behind their bikes.  Ghost Rider shows up in the middle of Tokyo driving the Ghost Train!  The bad girls are defeated, Hawkeye is convinced to let Ghost Rider and her new official mentor Blaze go off on their own.  Tune in next issue for the new new Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Red Hulk, X-23 and Venom.

Sigh.

Now while writing it I thought, on paper this seems like it could be a balls out crazy story, but it fails in execution.  Ghost Rider looks different in every panel.  I don’t have a good image of what her look is, nor do I think it flows from previous issues.  If it does, then there is a failure in the costume not being seen clearly.

Speaking of things not being clear, where the fuck are they?  They appear to be in some desert area and the caption says “Japan”.  Alright fine, Japan must have lots of areas that look like the American west.  But then the ghost train and the battle (such as it is) extends into downtown Tokyo during rush hour.  Downtown Tokyo.  During rush hour.  There is absolutely NOTHING in any panel that establishes either of these things.  One, the rush hour traffic consists of one bus and one car.  Yes, crazy times in one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world.  Also, if its going to take place in Tokyo, why not draw something that puts it in Tokyo.  Instead all we get are sketches of buildings and one I assume is meant to be a giant advertisement on one of these poorly drawn buildings.  I realize it may be hard to find photo reference of such a spot.  Lets see.  OH! Only 5 million pictures online.  Not nearly enough.

If you didn’t know Tokyo is within steps of the same vast desert everyone was fighting in before.  You wouldn’t know because there are no train tracks leading outside of town.  There are tracks out of town, some in town, but they keep disappearing.  The Steel Sisters are driving towards a train, but you wouldn’t know because there are no train tracks.  Establish your shot!

I have gone on for way too long on this title and it doesn’t deserve to be talked about so much.  But with its cancellation imminent I think I’ll stick with it until the end.  Just to figure out what NOT to do.
