Record Review: “New Cathedral” by Anthony Raneri

Bayside’s resident frontman Anthony Raneri has always had the desire to write some songs outside of the band. Songs that wouldn’t fit into the concept of the band, but influenced Raneri throughout his life. This self released EP included five songs written by Raneri, and offers up a variety of unique musical stylistic choices.

The EP kicks off with a country song. That’s right I said country song, but despite that, through “Sandra Partial,” Raneri does the genre justice, while making it sound fresh.  “Charleston” has definitive roots in ska, but again, Raneri manages to put his stamp on it, making it his own. The short albums end, “Please Don’t Leave” ties it up in a nice little bow, while making the Beatles still relevant today. If anything, this short album proves that Anthony Raneri can hold his own, and offers up a possible full length in the future.
