Daken Dark Wolverine #19 Review.

This is the conclusion of Roston’s battle against Daken and the Runaways.  Daken lets the Runaways wear Roston down and then Daken tries to come in for the kill.  It doesn’t quite work, but his non girlfriend girlfriend Donna pilots a helicopter right into Roston.  Daken gives him the kiss of death and then leaves him to the Runaways.

And that’s it?

I have so many problems with this.  One, the Runaways are just thrown in here.  No love for the characters at all, no depth, no growth.  They are just there.  Its like someone looked at a map of the Marvel Universe and just threw whatever team was based in California into the book.  I guess there’s no version of the Order left in the Marvel U.

Daken watches while the Runaways beat up Roston.  His inner monologue is all, stay and wait, but he jumps into battle anyways.  Not because of any need to do what’s right, but because he is turned on by the battle and cant hold back any longer.  His powers are supposed to have lessened, he should be a drug addict, but none of this is really touched on for the last two issues.

He’s not written as either a hero or a villain.  But that doesn’t mean he’s an anti hero either.  He’s just a mutant that cant get shit done.  He cant lead, he cant defeat the bad guy, he cant even be sick and injured well.  Daken isn’t strong enough to defeat Roston but like I said earlier, Donna drives a helicopter right into him.  Its a lot like when we all thought that the Green Goblin died.  But, you know, without any consideration to size or scale.

Daken, you know the bastard evil murderous son of a similar man, walks away from Roston and lets the Runaways do what they will.  This implies that the kids will bounce on the baddie like a pack of jackals and strip the god like powers from his marrow.  When really, as they are still kids, they’re probably just waiting for SHIELD to come up and lock Roston away until some later writer wants to use him.

The title is facing cancellation soon, and that might be enough to keep me around.  I want to see what sort of ending could possibly be done on this title that would satisfy the few that love it and make any one care about Daken’s future.
