Battle Scars #2 Review.

I hated the first issue, what do I think about this one?

Read on to find out!

The trick with this 6 issue mini series, I think, is to accept that it is a 6 issue series and no information is going to come out until issue 5 at the earliest.  Whoever and whatever Marcus Johnson is, we wont find out anytime soon.  So its best to just accept the story as a story and try to enjoy it.

Marcus is nearly killed by Taskmaster, but saved by Captain America.  Quake saves Marcus and takes him away to SHIELD’s new headquarters.  Marcus wants to know what the hell is going on, fights off numerous SHIELD agents and escapes.  He turns up in Atlanta and contacts a friend to help him get back at Taskmaster (blaming Taskmaster for his mom’s death).  All the while Scorpio watches.

Taking the story within the Marvel Universe, its fine.  Both sides have been watching this guy in case he became something. While he’s “dormant”, for lack of a better term, he is left alone.  But as soon as his potential is about to bubble through, its a free for all to be the guys that have Marcus in hand when shit happens.  This is fine.  There’s always room for more characters in comics.  Also, even though there are hundreds of new comics every month, there are still millions of stories yet to be told.

The only thing that takes me out of the comic is when characters talk about Marcus’s military record.  The US military, and all wars, would not be the same in Marvel’s world as it is in the real world.  Yes, there used to be a very cool thing in the Marvel U. in which the world seemed so close to our own.  That time is long gone.  J Jonah Jameson is mayor of NY.  The President of the USA in Marvel is most likely not Barack Obama.  Therefore, the wars that the military fights would not be the same.  Would there even be a need for a military?  Wouldn’t patriotic super beings be enough?  Marcus Johnson would not have fought in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya or anywhere else within the last 10 years because the history of the Marvel Universe would be so different than our reality.  I would have an easier time believing Marcus is a veteran of some Latverian war.

This detail aside its not a bad comic.  I’m curious about what is going on here and why Marcus is so damn important.  I just hope its worth it.

  1. I think it turns out he is Nick Furys grand kid or even Captain Americas. Could be a LMD type of Nicks maybe to coincide with the ultimate or movie version of Nick Fury. Making him part of the Patriot or Isaiah Bradley family would be to easy.
