Yes, yes. Most geeks are well into the Doctor Who world by now. Or are they? There is so much Doctor Who goodness out there to choose from.
Have they seen the current series? Featuring Doctors 9, 10 and 11 the current version of Doctor Who is the greatest scifi property of the last 10 years (maybe even 20 or more). Every season is a huge story arc where the world and/or the universe is about to end and only our friend the Doctor (plus usually his human companion) is able to save all that we know. Buy the first set and be prepared to spend hundreds of dollars (or buy a Netflix subscription) to enjoy the rest.
But wait there’s more!
Torchwood spun off of Doctor Who. An R rated show with plenty of sex and violence for everyone. Of the proper age. Aliens and time travel sure. But also huge moral questions and characters so rounded they roll right off the screen and into your life. Not for children, but any adult with an open mind will love this series. Even the US/Starz season was great. Torchwood Children of Earth also wins the Team Hellions seal of approval as one of the all time great stories. Yes, all time and stories. That includes books, movies, everything.
And there’s still more!
Previous versions of Doctor Who
As I wrote above, the current Who series started with number 9. The previous Doctors all existed years if not decades ago. Sure their tales don’t have the effects budget that the current ones do but they are still great stories. It would be like saying that Star Wars A New Hope (original version) doesn’t look as pretty as stuff today. No it doesn’t but its still a great movie. And these are still great episodes. All your favorite villains are here like the Daleks and the Cybermen. Plus so many more.
Still more!
Torchwood may be for adults but the Sarah Jane Adventures is for kids. Sarah Jane was a former companion of the Doctor (one of those previous ones listed above). She went off camera for awhile and then with the resurrgence of the current series, she came back as well. Kids, not as scary but still kind of scary aliens, and K-9! Its fun for the whole family.
All of this plus hundreds of books, magazines, toys, props and everything else you can dream of. If you have a geek on your list who is only watching the current show there is no end to the list of possible gifts you could get for him/her to expand their Doctor Who love and knowledge.
