Christmas Geek Gift Ideas Day 9 – Ghost Hunting Equpment

As the resident paranormal investigator at Team Hellions and because it’s that time of year again, I thought I’d give you some great gift ideas for those interested in the paranormal. Whether you’ve been in the biz for a while or you just want to start out, here are some great and affordable pieces of equipment essential for the investigator at heart.

I used to piece together pieces of equipment from Amazon.com, but in the past few years I’ve found that The Ghost Hunters Store provides better quality equipment, better selection, and cheaper prices.

The first piece of equipment commonly used by the paranormal professional is the EMF detector (Electromagnetic Frequency). Ghosts are said to give off electromagnetic frequencies and these detectors can pick up on those frequencies. The Ghost Hunter Store offers the basic model pictured below.

This version operates in the ranges from 1-5 milliGauss, which is right within that range for spiritual activity. This model also features a flashing red light and sound when a reading is picked up. TGHS offers this currently for $27.95.

For a more unique perspective on the EMF detector; another hot piece of equipment, which came on the market a few years ago, is the K-II meter. This meter also measures electromagnetic frequencies but uses colored lights to display changes in these frequencies. This piece of equipment has also been useful as a communication device to ask yes or no questions.

The K-II meter features and on/off button, which used to be wicked expensive to get, but now come as a regular feature. It also ranges from 1-20. I have personally used this meter, and its accuracy is remarkable. It’s currently available at TGHS for $59.90.

One of the most unique pieces of equipment to be used these last few years is the laser grid. Used to detect visual disturbances and shadows, this very affordable piece of equipment has been used on various investigations on Ghost Hunters.

The laser grid is best used with cameras, if possible, but is a great tool to validate a personal experience.  The laser grid currently sells for $28.00 at TGHS. You can also find tripods ranging from $10.00 to $14.00.

Finally, I saved my favorite piece of equipment for last. EVP’s or Electronic Voice Phenomena are one of the most compelling pieces of evidence an investigator can get with his/her equipment. I have documented many EVPs in my career, including ones in which the spirit has said my name.

With that said, I’d like to introduce a new, incredible piece of technology that I recently learned about. This is a USB flash drive that is also a digital voice recorder.

It records audio files in WAV format and is easy to pull off the recorder (just plug in and pull it off). It has space enough for about 70 hours of recording and a lithium ion battery that will last for 15 hours. The only downfall to this is that there is no ability to playback, but if you just want to set down a recorder in a room for a while, this is the piece for you. It goes for $30.00 on TGHS.

For those that want that playback feature and a really nice digital voice recorder, I suggest a recorder that can record in something other than Windows Media, if you can find something that records in WAV or MP3, that would be preferable. This model (pictured below) is really nice, and still pretty affordable.

This recorder will record in stereo, and in the MP3 format. It has a nice back light on it, to keep track of how far you are into an EVP session. This very nice piece of equipment can be yours for $58.00.
