Mudman #1 Review.

The newest super hero from Image Comics!  Remember during Image Round 2 when that tagline meant shitty comics ahead?  Yeah, we’re a long way past that.  To find out what side MudMan comes in on, read along.

Mudman is awesome!   I’m tempted to take the full opening from creator, Paul Grist, and copy it word for word.  He is promising us a good comic every month, and that’s it.  Not a movie pitch, not a graphic novel broken up into 3o-ish page installments.  Comic.  Oh its been a long time since we’ve had something so pure like that.

Mudman is Owen Craig and we are only seeing a dustmite of an image into the world that is Mudman.  In one issue, one issue!, we get an origin, a mystery, a conspiracy and a supporting cast.  What in the hell?!  No one does that anymore.  Is this Stan Lee’s child?  Did Jack Kirby fake his death?  Yeah, that’s the level we’re talking about here.  Great fully formed story, character development, sub plots and future story arcs being built and all this from the first issue.

The art is stunning and damn if there’s not a little bit of everyone in there.  Kirby action, Mignola black mystery, Bruce Timm animation, its like a super hero comic greatest hits package.

You can read everything on the surface level or debate if there is something larger going on.  Are you reading it for fun or for deep debate?  Either way Mudman is perfect for you.

I’m going to be picking this up every month and reviewing it right away.  This will be my first pick for a gateway drug into the rich world of comics.
