Wow! Classic amazing super hero stories are back, and its all here in Daredevil.
You know how good my review is going to be, but read on for all the details!
Daredevil is trying to protect two men who have something coveted by the most dangerous terrorist organizations in the Marvel Universe. He fights a new villain named the Bruiser. Straight up super hero tale. But its the writing and how the story plays out that makes this an instant all time favorite.
Lets take the Bruiser first. He looks like a generic luchadore on the cover, but then the character unfolds. Bruiser is a mark. Follow me here. A mark, in wrestling terminology, is a super fan. He buys the magazines, goes to shows, knows the real names of the wrestlers. Bruiser is the mark of the super being world. He wants to battle and fight his way up the ranks of villains to combat stronger and stronger heroes along the way. He even tells Daredevil that he has ranked him! Then take a look at Bruiser’s costume. Sponsors! He is sponsored by the terrorist groups of Marvel. AIM, Serpent Society and more adorn his tights. This is brilliant.
Then there’s the fact that he’s a pretty bad ass villain too. Bruiser can shift the center of his mass, thus making his fist or knees or whatever come crashing down with the force of his full body weight (and more, physics are fun!). It is this skill that brings us to the star of the book and how he solves this problem. Its great super hero writing when Daredevil needs to use more than fists to solve a problem. He uses his brains and his gift of extra sensitive senses to find the weakness in his opponent. Punching on its own doesn’t solve problems. You, as the hero, need to be smarter not just stronger. Its a little thing but it is missing from most comics.
This use of brains plays into the big finale of the book. DD, surrounded on all sides, TALKS HIS WAY OUT OF IT!!!! He uses logic and the bad guys let him walk out the front door! When was the last time you saw that in any comic?
Not to say there isn’t action galore within. There is a two page kick from Daredevil that is one of the most beautiful drawings of the character I’ve ever seen. Yeah, I’m well aware of who else has drawn the Man Without Fear. This ranks up there.
There are a lot of comic bloggers out there wondering how to get new readers. Here you go. If this comic was the first one I ever bought, I would be hooked for life. I’m thrilled to have picked up this title on a whim and will count down the days until the next issue.
