Go to the store, go online, or go to your favorite streaming site and enjoy today’s big new releases on DVD and/or BluRay. In case this is your first time on the Hellions site, the picks will mostly be of the geeky variety. Not always, not exclusively, but chances are that’s where the picks will lie.
Speaking of all that, lets get to the picks!
Super 8
Somehow we missed out on seeing this one in the theater. I want to watch it badly but I’m so worried that it wont live up to the hype. Not just the actual hype for the film, but all the hype I’ve put on it as well. This movie in my mind is the 2011 version of ET or Goonies or The Princess Bride (thank you Chad). All of that is so much to live up to, so am I setting it up for the fall? Maybe I should wait to watch the movie until my preconceptions have faded away. If you’re not as worried about these things as I am, enjoy the hell out of the flick today.
Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Possibly crap, but it has potential. The two Conan movies from the 80s were in no danger of being confused for Academy Award winning pictures, but if you like the swords and sorcery genre its pretty fun. This looks to be a bit more violent and gritty, but that’s not always a bad thing. Definitely worth a geeky rent and maybe it will get you to read the books or even expand your Howard knowledge to things like Solomon Kane.
Doctor Who The Complete Sixth Series
If you’re reading this site and don’t watch Doctor Who you can leave right now. One of the greatest scifi properties of all time across all genres and mediums. The Silence is creepy as hell, Rory is bad ass, the Doctor is the greatest man (for lack of a better word) in all the universe. Every episode is a self contained wonder, and builds up the overall arc of the season. The most brilliant series in the world today.
The Adventures of Tintin Season One
I always tried to watch this in order during the brief time it was airing on Nickelodeon. Now, thanks to the big budget movie coming out, the old cartoons are getting a lot more attention. Hopefully I can sit down and marathon all of these finally. Also, if anyone wants to send over some of the comics to me shoot me an email and I will love them forever. (The books! You, I will like.)
WWE Vengeance 2011
Which, I apparently did not review or I would link to that here. Hmmm…. Oh right. Big Show and Mark Henry broke the ring. And Punk was buried. Really, a lot of the same stuff going on now. The story lines have not progressed that far in a month. TNA releases a twin pack of Hardcore Justice and No Surrender today as well. I may have reviewed one of those, but in this case, I just don’t care enough to look it up.
The Super Hero Squad Show The Infinity Gaunlet Volume 2
Its a kids show based on Marvel characters that ends up being far more brilliant and well written than it has any right being. Toddlers shouldn’t be able to comprehend Thanos trying to rule the universe through his collection of gems, and yet, that’s what you get. Great show.
Helldriver
What the hell is this? “From the creators of Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police”. Sold! I don’t even need to know anything more.
Conan the Adventurer Season Two Part One
5 hours and 13 episodes from the greatest company in the world (if you’re a geek, and those of you that aren’t are ignorantly missing out) Shout Factory! Make it a double feature with this set and the new movie. I’m willing to bet you’ll have more fun with this set.
Your fucked up choices of the week are: Great White Death. Featuring “real” shark attacks. If you love grainy old news footage, this DVD will be for you. Or you can choose “Moist Fury”. An “over the top 80s style revenge comedy”. Oh good, and here I thought with such a title it would be a tasteless flick.
Let me know what you’re picking up today. And remember, if you want to send any screener copies or gifts of your product to the Hellions, email us! teamhellions@gmail.com
