Posting my National Novel Writers Month writings here! Its my first attempt at writing anything this long, but not for the lack of ideas. I’m taking this idea of a super hero universe that answers all of my own questions on the crazy world of comics. There are some topics never addressed, and others that just don’t line up. This is my take on super heroes, one chapter at a time for all of November.
Balls Out Chapter One
Ronnie Baldwin sat in his middle white class high school doodling in his math textbook. He was great in his average ways. Blonde hair, just under six feet tall with a normal no abdominals but also no gut sort of build. Course 2 was the last class of the day and Ronnie had his fill of cosines. The bell rings and with a bounce Ronnie runs down to the science lab. The new science teacher, Steve Hammond, had just graduated college and wasn’t that much older than Ronnie. They sat after school hours to run experiments just for fun. It began with tests they found online and then expanded to their own creations. Steve and Ronnie began recording the tests, under fake names and minus certain details so the school board wouldn’t find out. They were invited to show off a magnet perpetual motion idea as guests at a scientific journal’s annual meeting.
Days later, they have shown off the experiment and are sitting front row watching all of the real experiments. There were amazing ideas for space exploration, green energy, and fantastic theories on other dimensions. A lot of it was above Ronnie’s head but that didn’t make it any less fascinating. Hours into the event Ronnie left to find something to eat. What was called the catering table had nothing more than donuts and bagels. There was a soda fountain too which dispensed more syrup than actual delicious fizzy drink. Ronnie, being young and able to digest anything, ate many a sticky donut and drank far too much of the syrup. He tried to sneak back to his seat but was seen by the scientists on the stage. They took his disturbance as a sign that Ronnie wanted to volunteer for their latest experiment.
The two scientists on stage were showing off a test of their teleportation theory. Ronnie was to throw a ball into a metal circle that was standing between the two men. While it looked to just be a circle, showing through to the rest of the stage behind it, the scientists assured everyone that it was truly a portal to somewhere else. They didn’t know where the somewhere else was, but the balls they threw into the circle before, had not returned. Ronnie was to stand a certain distance away from the circle, and throw the ball into it. A simple enough task for a teenager of average size and strength. Ronnie threw the ball, and the sticky residue from his snack held onto the ball after he had attempted to throw it. The ball fell and slightly rolled from his hand instead of flying through the air and into the circle. Forgetting that he was supposed to keep his distance, and seeing a ball on the floor, Ronnie did what everyone would do. He walked forward to pick up the ball. The distance was too close, and Ronnie felt a pull into the circle. Now, standing close, he could see something through the circle that was not the stage he had been on. He tried to pull backwards, but the strength of whatever this is was too strong. Ronnie was sucked through the circle, leaving all attended shocked and horrified.
Ronnie Baldwin was listed as a missing person, assumed dead, and that is where the story ended for all who attended that science panel. Ronnie was very much alive though, and a man in a mask was looking down on him waiting for Ronnie to open his eyes.
