Last week was chaotic, and I missed posting that week’s new releases. I suck, I know. So we’ll quickly go over those ones and get into this week. Go out and buy great movies, wonderful TV shows, and screw the big businesses by buying independent! Team Hellions strongly recommends Scarecrow Video. Go to their site to see what’s new from them, and follow them on Twitter too!
Yes Pirates of the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides comes out today. The series just doesn’t do it for me though. I saw the first one, thought it was alright, but that’s it. Haven’t bothered with the later releases at all. If you think I’m missing something incredible, please let me know.
Batman Year One.
Any DC animated movie is an instant purchase for me. They’re always fun, and usually at least 10 times more entertaining than most of the dreck thrown up on theater walls. This is a Batman origin story, loosely based on the Frank Miller graphic novel. Its a not yet perfect Batman and a great example of character growth. Plus a Catwoman short!
Red State
Fuck and Yes. I really need to watch this, and soon. I’ve been a fan of Kevin Smith from day one. Such a fan that I even hated him for a short time. But this isn’t a slacker comedy, this movie is art. Smith has now arrived and can go into history as a great director, and the DVD or BluRay can arrive at your house today as well!
The Captains
William Shatner interviewing all of the other Star Trek captains from the franchise’s rich history. Its a geek’s wet dream but also a must watch for fans of acting, writing, the inner workings of television and film. If you’re someone that enjoys watching DVDs, then this feature is a must own for you. You don’t even have to be a Trekkie. Nor do you have to yell at me for using that term.
V The Complete Second Season
Is this show still on? No? Alright, I’ll add it to this week’s list then. If a sci fi show isn’t given a fair chance by its network, then I find it easier to wait until the inevitable cancellation and marathon the entire series. See also, Heroes.
Thundercats Season One, Book One
Then there are shows that everyone tells you are incredible and you just flat out slack off on watching it. I’ve heard nothing but great stuff about this cartoon from many people that I trust. I may need to count the pennies and buy this one up just to get caught up and decide for myself if it really is that freaking good.
WWE Night of Champions
All the titles are on the line, and I’m pretty sure a couple of them changed hands too. I think I even wrote up a review of it too. Somewhere over HERE.
Beats Rhymes and Life The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest
One of the best music documentaries in years, if not decades. Fair and honest, and brilliantly filmed by Michael Rappaport. Yeah, that one.
SHOUT FACTORY IN THE HOUSE!!!
Kevin Smith Too Fat for 40.
This streamed on Netflix a couple of months ago and it may be the best of the 4 Kevin Smith stand up DVDs that have been released so far. His command of the audience is a super power to behold. The stories he tells go off in 100 directions but its never once boring or uninteresting. The show is about two hours long and passes like its been only two minutes.
Smodimations Season One
If you’ve ever listened to even a minute of a Kevin Smith podcast, you heard something that you need to see. While you weren’t there to see the story when it happened. Nor do you live in the mind’s eyes of Kevin Smith or Scott Mosier. You can have this set to enjoy and stay up all night laughing hysterically.
LAST WEEK
Green Lantern
No, its not a perfect movie at all. But its a fucking Green Lantern movie! Who the hell ever thought we would ever ever ever get a live action Green Lantern movie just 5 or 10 years ago? Complete with all the Corps! Its a fun movie. Sit back and enjoy it like you are seeing this as a child. Don’t look for Oscar nominations. Just enjoy some super heroes in space and be excited like its not a school day!
Best of Green Lantern
Just a collection of some of the Green Lantern-centric episodes from the DC animated universe. It is unfortunately missing the episode of Duck Dodgers featuring Daffy Duck joining the Corps.
Aqua Unit Patrol Squad Season One
Its kind of ATHF, but kind of not. I’ll leave it at this, if you get high go out and buy this and enjoy the hell out of your evening. If you don’t, then this may not be your cup of shake.
Ladder Match 2 Crash and Burn
This is a must have for wrestling fans. One, its a 3 disc (more on the Blu) full of nothing but ladder matches. Second, there is some obscure stuff on here too. I don’t mean forgotten WCW stuff, although that is on here too. I mean matches from Ohio Valley and Smokey Mountain. How the hell did I miss this last week?!
Horror Movie Host Time!
Maria’s B- Movie Mayhem. You have the choice of Vampire at Midnight or Night of the Demon. There’s no need to give explanations of any of this. Its cheesy horror movies with former WWE Diva Maria doing her best Elvira impression.
SHOUT FACTORY TIME AGAIN!
Jem and the Holograms The Truly Outrageous Complete Series
Thirty hours of glamour and glitter, fashion and fame. She Ra had the He Man connection to ease us into it. But Jem was the show for boys that were already very comfortable with their sexuality. It wasn’t gay to watch Jem as long as you didn’t want the dolls. No, not even the Misfits. I don’t care how cool they are.
Captain America and Captain America II: Death Too Soon
I think this is finally the official release, despite the fact that this release has been hyped for months. Some of the worst super hero costumes ever put to film. Twice! Its so bad they were just hell bound to make a second one. Motorcycles too! And Connie Seleca! Well, how can you resist such a show?
