31 Days of Fright – Day 3 – Signs.

Before M Night Shamalamadingdong started to suck ass he made three really good movies.  This was the last of the three and it freaked out people across the world.

Signs is about a man trying to raise two children after his wife died.  His half wit brother helps him out and all is well in small town America.  Until there are strange sounds and shadows you may have seen out of your eyes corners.

Signs provides the most genuinely scary moments of my movie watching life.  The alien bathed in light silhouette standing atop the roof.  The hand reaching out from under the door, and of course the finger being chopped off.  Then there is the home video footage of an alien walking past a house.

This moment is all too real to many people.  Whether its watched obsessively or occasionally nearly everyone alive has sat through an is-it-real paranormal show.  These grainy images are how the majority of the world has seen creatures alleged to be otherworldly.  Should anything ever happen, and the majority of people feel its inevitable, the first contact will be on someone’s personal camera.

Signs delves into all that fright.  If something comes, I wont have much information and all I can hope to rely on are those around me.  No military, no government, just myself and whoever I happen to be near at the time.  And that thought is fucking terrifying.  Think of the people you work with.  Yes, the people that you come home and call a bunch of idiots.  What is something happened and you were stuck with them as your only way out?  Or what if you’re at home and breaking news comes across that its all true and there is now confirmation of alien life.  I’m ready to lock the doors and hide underneath my foil hat too.

All of this says nothing about how good the movie actually is too.  Filmed well, good plot and a great creepy score.  Yes, Mel Gibson is a fallen man, but he made this flick before we all knew what an ass he truly was.

One of the best scary movies I have ever seen and always a good way to get new viewers to jump out of their seats.
