Lets have some bloody marys and some shots while we talk about one of the greatest zombie movies of all time, Shaun of the Dead.
For those of you that don’t know, there’s a group of geeks in England who by hard work have put themselves in a position to make the fun movies that they always wanted to see. One of those movies is Shaun of the Dead. Shaun’s life is falling apart and he resolves to wake up the next morning, hell bent on resolving his life. Sometime over night the zombie apocalypse happened. Not that anyone told Shaun about that. As he discovers the catastrophe that is taking place, he also discovers the importance of his family, his friends and his girl.
The movie could very easily be silly. Or lame. Or bloodless. But it takes everything great about zombie movies and makes sweet sweet love to those things. The zombies are never the most important part of a zombie movie. Well at least not a good one. Its always about the human interaction. True to form, the major problem of the movie is not the undead, but the problems between the survivors. Every person becomes fully formed. Everyone has their arc, and you love each and every person. Which makes it that much more heartbreaking when some of them die. Hey, its a zombie movie. Of course some of them die.
Side note, if you have any love for British shows like Spaced or Black Books (etc) there are some amazing cameos in this movie. Multiple scenes had us pausing the movie and screaming out “its…..(that person)!”
There is fantastic gore, but not too much. A lot of comedy, but not too much. Tons of pop culture references, but again, not too much. This is the perfect movie for people who don’t like it. Its a great horror movie for horror fans, and for those who hate horror. Its a great English movie for those that hate the Brits. Its a great comedy for people who don’t usually go for comedies. Shaun of the Dead may be one of the most perfect all encompassing movies of all time. And its an instant horror classic! How many horror flicks cross over into the mass appeal and love that this one has?
