Hawk and Dove #1 Review.

From DC comics, Sterling Gates and Rob Liefeld.  Yes, Rob.  There may be feet jokes.

We start off with a “science terrorist” about to unleash his Monsters of Mass Destruction.  That would be a great wrestling tag team name.  I don’t mean to be a bastard already, but the more I look at Hawk on the title splash page the less I hate the drawing.  His right ankle is bent in a strange way.  I don’t know how he’s holding up a person with that strange grip.  Its not a dynamic pose by any means.  Then Dove, who has second billing, is this tiny figure between his legs.  Ugh.

The plane that these two are on, with their enemies, is about to crash into the Washington Monument.  I don’t know how familiar you are with Washington DC, but an out of control plane is not going to hit the Monument.  There is so much empty space and lower buildings that it is nigh impossible to hit that building at random.

Anyways, back to the story.  A zombie wakes up and starts attacking Hawk and Dove.  Did Dove turn invisible?  No, she kicks the zombie through the windshield of the plane.  Yet the windshield is not established.  Its not until two pages later that the “camera” is pulled back and we get an establishing shot, thus finally knowing what the hell happened.

Speaking of establishing, Dove is battling one zombie and… Hawk is fighting another?  When did that happen?  We only saw one zombie but somehow off panel another one appeared.  Its okay though because Hawk tells us, “nobody likes zombies anymore!”  Someone pull up the Diamond sales lists for me.  I’d like to compare sales of this title, and every issue of Youngblood to sales of the Walking Dead.

Dove flies out and tries to level the plane.  They save total destruction of the monument, however the plane does clip the side.  Then they argue over who failed who?!  Should Dove have been helping Hawk fight and let the plane crash where it may?  Or should Hawk have been helping Dove save the plane, and all collateral damage? Or will they ever realize that both sides are necessary and needed?  Oh these two crazy kids.

Hank is a lousy student, his dad has some sort of political clout, and the two heroes are in college together?  Alright, I guess.  Seems kind of early Marvel to me but hey that worked out well!  What?  Dove and Deadman are dating?  Did this exist before the reboot?  I don’t hate the idea, I’m just unsure of it.  This is rare for the internet, but I’ll hold back judgement until I know and read more about this relationship.

A flashback scene of Hank and Don, the original Dove, is shown.  They got these powers by wishing?  That’s, well how else did I think they’d get these powers?  So we pay tribute to the original Dove, but damn there’s a lot of continuity that DC is trying to claim took place all in the last 5 years.  How would you even be able to exist in a world with all of  these multiple battles and invasions and crises over only 5 years?  And here is a Crisis reference too.  Don died during “the worst crisis the world’s ever seen”.  In order for there to be a crisis, there must have been alternate worlds and again, that’s a lot in 5 years.  Wouldn’t there have to have been a Justice Society and an earth 2, etc, in order to have a crisis?

Anyways…

Dove has a secret and suddenly the reveal moves at a snail’s pace.  Dove and Don had… something.  “Hank can never know about me and Don.”  While that implies they were dating or something beforehand it could be anything.  Separated twins?  Future alternate world child?  Its comics!  Who knows?

Mysterious woman sighting!  She’s by the reflective pool.

The reflective pool which is apparently chest high.  (It is not.)  One of the zombies crawls out of the pool and is grabbed by… Dark Hawk?  No wait that’s a Marvel character.  I don’t know, someone who is dressed like Hawk but in an alternate color scheme.

Ugh.  I don’t even know what to think.  I’m a little curious what happens next but really not curious enough to spend the money.  I think I’ll read someone else’s copy.  That’s as glowing a recombination as I can give.  Go ahead and read it, but don’t spend cash on it.
