From DC Comics, Duane Swierczynski, and Jesus Saiz
There is a reporter in a church, talking with some mysterious other person. The reporter is scared because he has no facts to give his boss, but knows too much to live at the same time. Before anyone has the opportunity to kill him, the Birds fly into action. Who are the Birds? Black Canary, we’ve known and loved for years. Who the hell is Starling? Doesn’t matter because Dinah is tied up and hanging and we may have one dead hero before anything really begins.
Dinah meets with the newly walking and reborn Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. Babs doesn’t want to join the BoP but suggests others. The reporter is already following Canary, but no reason is yet given. This issue starts moving fast. Dinah and Starling (first name, Ev) are fighting invisible tech ninjas. Both sides are using the reporter as bait. Black Canary gets kissed by one of the ninjas. The car crashes through the church. I need to catch my breath.
Everyone is safe, the two Birds bring the reporter to Gotham International Airport and he’s about to be out of the picture. Oh. Did not expect it to be in that way. Reporter go boom. And that’s the last page of the issue.
I don’t know who Starling is, there are future team members on the cover that don’t appear in the issue, and there’s a huge lack of exposition and/or explanation in the issue. However, read as a chapter its a great start and I’m damn curious what will happen next.
Birds of Prey is on the list at least through the first graphic novel arc. How this story grows and is concluded will decide whether or not I stick with the title past issue 6.
